In one of my latest posts I talked about the valley of Ferriere, an enchanting place surrounded by nature that saw its period of greatest activity during the production of paper, where many paper mills in this valley were active and functioning

Today those paper mills are no longer there but all the remains of their buildings are still here, now the valley of Ferriere is aa very green wood full of waterways. During my journey I also found this waterfall which is located in a basin further downstream

The light was a bit strong and filtered through the branches, this meant that numerous contrasts were created between the areas struck by the sun and the darker ones. I captured this with a single shot and a 6-stop nd filter

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I edited the single shot with luminosity masks, used to adjust contrast lights and darkness

I increased the glow effect using TTS PRO applying an orton effect  and increasing the warm colors on the highlights

I also increased the lights coming from the highlights to give more enery to the warm between the trees.

I darkened some rocks with too much lights on them, I adjusted contrast using it applied to luminosity masks

I adjusted the yellow colors and the vibrance of the frame, the final step was to add a very soft vignette to give more impact to the waterfall

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

A shot captured inside the beautiful Valley of Ferriere, a natural reserve not so far from the city of Amalfi. Here there is an uphill path made up of many steps leading to this place. The history of the valley of ferriere is very old, once there were many ancient paper mills, where in ancient times paper production was very active in this valley, one of the best in all of southern Italy

Over the centuries the valley prospered thanks to the paper mills and nearby ironworks and the business reached its peak in the 1700s and lasted until the end of the 1800s, when historical events deprived southern Italy of the necessary financial resources for the modernization and mechanization of the manufacturing processes of these factories which, due to this, they closed

The closure of these activities and the particular climatic conditions of the place, have allowed a rapid unraveling of the structures that are now in ruins along the course of the stream keeping intact, however, all the suggestions of the case

Th Valley of Ferriere is absolutely a great spot for nature lovers and for trekking activities, it is really very interesting from a photographic point of view; in my uphill path I counted at least 3 waterfalls and I didn’t climb to the top

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take some shots of his waterfall including some underexposed shots to “save” the leaves from long exposure. I started from the darker exposure to lighten the image using luminosity masks

I lightened the water, the waterfall and the light coming from the top, then with TTS Pro panel, I warmed the image using two warm filters of the panel

I adjusted the contrast and brightness and I increased the tone of yellow colors and with the glow tool, I lightened some part of the leafs and other points of interest around the waterfall

I created a orton effect to increase the sense of darkeness with the light coming from the top

As last touch I created a soft vignette to emphatize the waterfall in the middle

I alway hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear this from you!

Always from the same location of Belluno Alps National Park I took this photo of the waterfall that feeds the “pools” of my previous post. They are charaterized by a small stream, but with a strong flow that is powerful enough to feed the whole system of which the valley is characterized

The turquoise color of which the water of the pools below is made up can already be seen in the part below the waterfall where it already begins to take on a very bright color

For this shot I used a Nd3 filter stops with a series of 3-shot bracketing to have the chance to perform digital blending

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started using a digital blending using my panel with the 3 shots bracketing taken

I regulated brights and contrasts using luminosity masks, than I used dodge and burn to adjust the lights around the rocks near the waterfall. Since the image was very flat I wanted to create a darker and at the same time soft effect with an orton effect filter and in particular the orton effect dark that you can find inside TTS Pro I used a 30% opacity to have a strong effect

I used curves to adjus the luminosity of the whole frame and after generating a strong vignette I fixed the final contrast and color correction to the final image you see

As final step I decreased the luminosity to create a dark mood in the whole picture

I hope you will find this informations usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

Pool With a View

Tags :

This magical place is near the regional park of Alps in Belluno, skirting the lake of Mis you arrive in this series of natural pools feed by a waterfall with the alps in the background

The crystalline water and the white rock at certain times of the day it reaches its most complete amazing yellow colours when sun goes behind the mountains and all take a great looking yellow like golden hour

To take this photo I decided to create a vertical photomerge of two shots so as to include as much as possible of the scenery

The waterfall that feeds the pools is on the back, so I could not include it in the same shot but I promise you that it will be the subject of my next posts 😀

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured two series of shots to photomerge, for each series I take 3 bracketed shots that I blended using auto blend darks function of TTS PRO

After a lights fix using curves applied to luminosity masks, I increased details and controlled contrast. With a warm filter, I generate more yellows tones and I decreased the luminosity of the mountain with dodge and burn

I applied a soft orton effect details using my panel, a orton effect that create the typical effect but avoiding to loose sharpness. I create a light painting in the picture using the brush on the main viewer’s eye points

I decrease the luminosity a bit and I generate a soft vignette as final steps

I hope you will find this informations usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

Cave In

Back from Japan, on my lastest trip I visited Friuli region in Italy, during the course of my itinerary I have marked many photographic spots and this is precisely one of those. This famous waterfall in this area is named Fontanon di Goriuda that faces to a mountain recess inside a wood. It’s amazing to be near and feel the loud noise of water coming from it, in the area that is exactly behind there is a flow of air that brings a lot of water so the wash is assured 🙂

During my days in those areas I found a really bad weather, the rain was strong beating most of the day, many roads were closed for collapsed trees and even the day I went to visit the Fontanon di Goriuda it was raining heavily, fortunately the recess in the rock allowed me to take pictures in complete calm sheltered from the rain

Finding the exact position to make this shot was not easy considering the too much water  coming under the waterfall and on the other side the ground was sloping with mud … at the end with a little patience and getting muddy 🙂 I could find this point of view, my intention was to portray an overview of what I was facing: the beautiful Friulian landscape with the Fontanon di Goriuda on the left

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 5 exposure brackets to make this but I don’t used all the shots for blending because the tree on the right moved too much from one pictures to another, so I just used one darker and one brighter exposure to fix the main darkness inside the cave and to decrease the lights in the sky

I launched  luminosity masks to made the main adjustments using contrasts and curves to lights and darkness, with the use of TTS PRO  I increased details and I launched orton effect to smooth the effect and to create a soft dreamy look around the waterfall. After this I used a white brush applied to a layer with soft light to intensify th glow effect selectively, you can see more of it here.

I little intensified the yellow look of the frame by applying a warm filter to the luminosity masks and then I stepped up the full color scale through the LAB Coloring

I also used dodge and burn around some areas that I wanted to lighten, as a final touch I lowered the brightness a little while preserving the light on the waterfall

As always I hope you will find this usefull. I love to ear that from you!

The Valley of Dreams Pt. 2

Also this photo was taken in the same location of my last post. I’m still talking about the Valley of the Ferriere located near the beautiful harbor town of Amalfi. On the path that climbs through a valley full of all natural beauty there are many waterfalls  and this is one of those that I found along my way

In particular it was a very narrow stream that flowed down, it caught my attention. It was difficult to find a good position to capture the scene since I could not get too close because of the splashes of water came decided on my filter screen and not too far to not compromise the composition

I used a -6 stop ND filter to smooth the water, compared to the previous photo where in all the shots I’ve done I never exceeded 30 seconds in this shot I had exposure times even longer than 2 minutes, I was in a dense thicket and the light that filtered was very low. Shutter speed for this photo is 120 seconds

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started using two exposure, not to made a digital blend but to save trees and leafs from movement. As always I used luminosity masks to decrease the lights around the water and softner the white effect of the long exposure. With my panel I launched details to boost of all them, launched also orton effect beacause I like this effect in all waterfall shots 🙂

Using dodge and burn tool I lightened the darker parts of the wood and I increased light on the direction of the sunrays. With a yellow brush I colored some part of the rocks reducing the opacity and setting the layer as soft ligth, in this way I intensified the yellow color on the rocks with a softner effect. I fixed contrast with luminosity masks reducing the effect decreasing the opacity. Also here I created a small vignette but increasing the bright of the image

I hope you will find this post usefull. I always love to ear this from you!

The Valley of Dreams

That’s right, the valley of dreams! is not really called in this way but it is a dream place for all nature lovers here! I’m talking about the Valley of the Ferriere that is located in the town of Amalfi, it is reached with about an hour walk with a walking path  inside of the town. Inside the valley there are many small waterfalls, rivers of all kinds and above all many lemon trees 🙂

Time ago this area was full of mills as evidenced by the ruins in the valley, It is a very interesting place to immerse yourself in nature and to add to the sea of Amalfi also a part of hiking. During the path inside the Valley of Ferriere I found this small waterfall that although it was not very high had a considerable and very strong water flow

Using a maximum time of 30 seconds shot and with the help of an ND1000 I reached a very smooth water without using a very long exposure time. I made several shots even vertically but in the end I preferred this view that had less foreground but immerses more in the context of the context, do not you think?

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I used a single shot for this, I started using the luminosity masks action to reduce lights around the waterfall and to increase darks on the shadows.  I used TTS Fast Panel to launch all my luminosity masks and to use high details to push up all the details in this frame. I launched orton effect to create a soft look around the waterfall, reducing the darker effect on the darker area using layer mask

I increased the yellow colors using a warm filter applied to luminosity masks. Using as always dodge and burn  to fix some strongly darks areas and to darken some overexposed part of the water. Also used back luminosity masks applied to curves to fix contrasts and lights again

In the final steps I reduce the luminosity of the whole picture and I added a small vignette to create a dark mood look

As always I hope you will find this informations usefull. I’m always happy to ear it from you!

The Valley of Silan

Here is another waterfall shot coming from the Veneto region, we are in the area around Bassano del Grappa where is this small waterfall in the valley Valrovina. Watching some pictures from the web, it seemed very interesting and so I decided to go to this small resort to take some photos

This spot is a well-maintained tourist trail that leads to this waterfall, the path continues to high following the course of the creek. There are several stones along the river where I set up with my tripod to shot at the waterfall

I wanted to bring in the frame as much as possible the view of the creek behind, which with the light of the trees was really very beautiful. I took the photo with an nd64 filter, taking some lighter exposures to try to light up some very dark rock areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This shot coming from a blend of 2 exposure, I blend the best take of the waterfall with another overexposed shot, to bring up all the lights around the rocks

Using Dodge and burn was very useless to recover some underexposed part and increse lighting. After a increase of details I launched orton effect to create a soft dreamy effect, I like so much the glow between the trees on the top of the picture

To complete this work I increased yellow colors. As final I fixed contrast using luminosity mask applied to midtones decreasing the darkest parts to avoid to make too under the darken part of the picture

I hope you will find this usefull. I always love to hear this from you

The Old Mill

Tags :

This picture is always from the natural valley near the river Bussento, the valley around the river is wonderful and full of this great waterfall spot. This is probably the main area of the oasis, the an old mill who as long lost his wheel, where in its place now there’s a small waterfall

I created this image with my nd1000 filter for about 60 second time long exposure, I used 7-shot bracketing function to have a full range of exposure, I started working on the image with the longest exposure time going to recover lights lightly on the darker images

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

By selecting the best exposures  I blended them using luminosity masks. saving the rocks from overexposure and the flow of the waterfallDodge and burn  has helped too much to finish this work.

Also in this picture I incresed the yellow colors of the leafs using my filter autumn colors. I also launched details using TTS Fast Panel. I used orton effect to create a soft dreamy look and I pushed up lights coming from the top part of the frame, as final touch I fixed some contrast and lights adding a small vignette

I hope you will like this and find usefull my info. I always love to ear this from you!

The Flow

Tags :

I took this photo in the natural oasis near the river Bussento, all the valley around the river is a dense bush downhill. I struggled not a little downhill to reach this location where a series of small waterfalls are explained in the river, the way is very impervious but the downhill, and especially the uphill 🙂 surely worth it!

I created this image with my nd1000 filter for about 60 second time long exposure, I used 7-shot bracketing function to have a full range of exposure, underexposed shots were very useful to save the leaves moved by the wind

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take the two best exposures and I blended them using luminosity masks. With dodge and burn I recover some underexposed spot in the frame and I fixed lights around the water flow. I incresed the yellow colors of the leafs using my filter autumn colors, you can find it inside TTS Fast Panel free downloadable here

With a warm filter I added more yellows to the highlights and more glow adding a slight orton effect. I increased the highlights coming to the top using luminosity masks applied to lights and always using lm, I increased darks subtracting lights to avoid to overexpose the other lights in the frame

I really hope you will find this usefull. I always love to hear that from you!
