Hands Lifted

Waiting for my next trip I spend a day last week in the Tuscia region. It was a name given to the old region of Etruria now named conventionally has the name of the region around Viterbo

Here there is a beautiful beech forest, located on Monte Cimino. The beech forest and is a pleasant walk (especially the summer) to go through these beautiful centenary trees, very suggestive the lights that filter through the branches during the morning

I found these two trees that they had a shape almost representing hands towards the sky, where a strong morning light filtered creates beautiful plays of light

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I edited the single shot with luminosity masks, used to adjust contrast lights and darkness, no blend here was possible because I was freehand and the wind moved the leaves

I increased details using TTS PRO ,created two warm filters (highlights and shadows) applied to luminosity masks to give more yellows tones to trees and leaves

I launched an orton effect to give more sens of glow in the frame, plus to intensity the light I used the glow tool with a brush around the main lights area

With the use of dodge and burn I reduced some strong lights around the trees and as final step I added a vignette to give more prominence to the light coming to the sky I darkened some rocks with too much lights on them, I adjusted contrast using it applied to luminosity masks

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

The Autumn Path

Tags :

This is a photo taken last autumn during my tour along the Friuli Venezia Giulia, were days of heavy rain and very adverse weather but during those days I could admire beautiful autumn landscapes

It often happened that I stopped with the car along the routes to get off to take pictures. Among these landscapes that have impressed me there is certainly this view of the valley of Raccolana wrapped in the fog and the colors of autumn, down the walking path through the woods

What struck me was the mix of colors not only present in the valley between the green and the red that blend the leaves and the trees but also the perfect meeting between the warm and the cold light at the end of the day

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take this as single shot, so I edited the image by using luminosity masks applied to curves adjustment layer, without any blend

Using my panel TTS PRO, I launched autumn colours to increase the red look of the autumn foliage, with the same tool I launched high details to increase the details over the frame

My next step was to give more warm look to the photo so I applied a warm filter to the highlights, after this I launched orton effect  to give a more soft look to the landscape

Using dodge and burn applied to luminosity masks I give more lights over the fog, after this I fixed contrast between highlighs and darks

Latest steps was to decrease the general lights and to add a soft sharpen to the final frame

I always hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear this from you!

Towards the Sky

Another image from the Bamboo forest of Arashiyama, in my previous post I have spoken extensively about this forest, which is an unmissable destination for those who go to Japan, but I also talked about how difficult it is to take pictures inside it to stay quiet away from tourists… Well, the photo in question instead does not consider all this 😀

In fact in this incredible location just look up at the sky in some points of the forest to find shows of trees that are intertwined upwards, leaving just some glimmers in the light to enter and it is precisely these glimmers of light to create the magical atmosphere that reigns in the Bamboo forest of Arashiyama

I love the play of light that is created between the trunks of the bamboo, especially those that have formed on the left, illuminating some parts of the forest that are in the shadow areas. I made this shot handheld, without a tripod although in fact I used bracketing as I always do for habit at the end but I have only used one exposure of these, the reason? the wind and the leaves that moved made impossible any sort of alignment between the trees and the image will result blurry if I use digital blending

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

As anticipated a moment ago this is a single shot, so I exploited the potential of luminosity masks to raise and lower the lights and shadows of the image. Although I intervened several times on the central light coming from the opening between the trees, I have also chosen to leave the light source strong, to give greater contrast to the image but also to increase the sense of illumination.

I increased details using my panel placing the effect with 50% opacity and than I launched the orton effect decreasing the opacity to 10%. After increasing the yellow tones of the image with two warm filters applied to highlights and shadows, with dodge and burn I made some adjustments on the top leaves and on the dark tree on the right

I tried as much as possible to keep an editing similar to the one in my previous photo since the same location I like the idea of having results in terms of color and lighting similar, although the subject and lighting in this case is completely different. For this reason also this time I used Color Efef Pro with Sunlight filter and reducing opacity to 35%, to increase the glow coming from the main light

Last passage was to create a dark vignette but this time without increasing the light in the center part of the frame, the light would have been really too much this time 🙂

As always I hope you will find this usefull. Love to ear this from you!

The Bamboo Path

Before leaving for Japan I spent several days doing my itinerary and looking at many photos of the locations I would visit, the bamboo forest of Arashiyama is undoubtedly one of the most photographed places in the world.  From a trivial search in google you will find hundreds of images of all kinds of this forest, and all this is enough to make you understand how much this place can be visited and photographed by tourists

For my first time in Japan I could not miss the bamboo forest of Arashiyama and for this reason I decided to move very early in the morning, for some locations such as this, the early alarm clock is the only solution to avoid hordes of tourists photo bombing and their hateful selfie sticks 🙂

The location of the Arashiyama bamboo forest is fantastic, it’s a unique place here you can find a a thick and silent bamboo forest where you can ear the only sound of the wind in through the leaves. Inside the forest I moved to the path that led to the sanctuary, looking for some openings in the trees and the perspective that would better the beauty of the place, after some attempts I found a spot where I stopped to shoot, I realized 7 exposures bracketing to make sure you capture the full dynamic range of the scene

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started blending my exposures using TTS PRO, with the final blended image I increased the yellow tones of highlights and shadows using a yellow filter applied to luminosity masks. In my mind I imagined this pictures as a glow effect so I pushed up orton effect and with the glow tool I increased the lights over the sky

After a soft detail increase through the bamboos I increased the shadows using darks luminosity masks applied to curves tool, in the same way I fixed contrasts using midtones. With dodge and burn I made some fix on the darker part of the picture

I increased a little more the yellow tones using Sunlight filter of Color Efex pro, reducing the opacity to 35%, this effects contributes to create a beautiful glow thorough the trees and a yellow warm over the grove

To finish I created a small vignette always using my panel, if you are not a TTS PRO user to create a vignette essentially it needs a circular selection in PS with the Elliptical Marquee tool, and then invert the selection

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Bled

Tags :

Hi guys here we are as usual with the appointment of the weekly photo. As you could easily imagine I finished photos to edits 🙂 and thanks to the bad weather and many seasonal illness I have not succeded to shot anything new. This is why today I also propose a photo from my archive of photos taken from the past 🙂

In this case we are talking about Lake Bled, a magical and beautiful place that I recommend everyone to visit at least once. Lake Bled is located in Slovenia, not far from Lubjiana, it can be reached by car in about an hour and a half from the highway and the whole area offers many other important places to visit and for excursions. I take this photo  in 2013 with my old Camera when I went on the island of the lake by rowing boat (it is one of the attractions of the place)

I hope to find time one day to come back here in Bled again, and take pictures with my new equipment soon! In the meantime I look forward to leaving for my new trip at the end of March,  for the location at the moment I  want to keep it secret … 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single exposure shot, I fixed lights and darks using luminosity masks, with TTS Fast Panel I launched details and dodge and burn to increase details and brighten some part of the frame, specially around the bushes of the island

With a brush with soft light effect I incrased slighly yellows in the sky to give a soft look of drama in the sky. Always using luminosity masks, I increased contrast applying midtones excluing darks to curves layer. If you use my panel you can easily do this selecting  midtones 3 and subtracting by this, a dark layer pressing ALT keyboard and pushing on darks 2. After this if you lauch curves layer you could move only the specific selection of this and add contrast better

Last two passages was to decrease the lights in the sky and add a small vignette to create a dark mood to the image

As hope you will find this information usefull. I love to ear this from you!

The Flow

Tags :

I took this photo in the natural oasis near the river Bussento, all the valley around the river is a dense bush downhill. I struggled not a little downhill to reach this location where a series of small waterfalls are explained in the river, the way is very impervious but the downhill, and especially the uphill 🙂 surely worth it!

I created this image with my nd1000 filter for about 60 second time long exposure, I used 7-shot bracketing function to have a full range of exposure, underexposed shots were very useful to save the leaves moved by the wind

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take the two best exposures and I blended them using luminosity masks. With dodge and burn I recover some underexposed spot in the frame and I fixed lights around the water flow. I incresed the yellow colors of the leafs using my filter autumn colors, you can find it inside TTS Fast Panel free downloadable here

With a warm filter I added more yellows to the highlights and more glow adding a slight orton effect. I increased the highlights coming to the top using luminosity masks applied to lights and always using lm, I increased darks subtracting lights to avoid to overexpose the other lights in the frame

I really hope you will find this usefull. I always love to hear that from you!

I found this shot between my shots of my trip near Bolzano and Dolomites and Lake Carezza  was a pleasant surprise that I met along my way. I remember well that in that day my destination was not even lake Carezza but the Sass Pordoi, which is several kilometers further from this lake

Unfortunately that day I found the cable car to go inexplicably closed, with any explaination on the website, so I went back and I stopped here to take some shots. It was almost a fortune to have found the closed cable car, I would not have discovered this magical place

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended all exposures with the luminosity masks, then I made some color correction on the green and the yellow. I used dodge and burn to lighten the darker parts of the trees and increase highlights on the mountain. I stepped up lights and darks in the foreground area then I increased contrast

With TTS Fast Panel I launched high details and sharpen over the picture, I also used the panel to launch LAB Color that give to the mountains a touch of gold. After applied a orton effect to darken a bit and create a glow effect the last touch was to darken a little more the frame

This is a old find from my pictures from the lake Calaita in Trentino, I  left behind this photo, which deserved to be processed. I really appreciated the beauty of this lake during winter with its frosts, definitely come back next winter in this beautiful place to take new pictures here

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The workflow of this shot is similar of the previous posts. I blended the shots with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast and then with my panel  I launched high details and sharpen to increase details in the picture, I used dodge and burn to increase the light around the main rocks, the nearest fields and the trees.

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and increased darks to make uniform light in the frame. After this I used orton effect to create a glow contrasted effect, I also increased contrast using darks 2 applied to curves adjustment layer.

With the help of hue/saturation I decreased blue on the top of the picture.  I increasesed vibrance using LAB color technique and darkened border of the frame using a vignette tool. I hope you will find this information usefull, for every tips or question write to me. I always love to hear you 🙂

Long Way Home

This is a shot taken outside the walls of San Gimignano, in this area, it is possible to see the view of the typical hills of this part of the Italy is one of the most characteristic places in the area.

I made this shot from San Gimignano lookout on a cloudy day during the morning, it was my last shot on this area before get back into the car and go back home

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The first thing I did was crop the photo, in fact, the image you see is the result of a crop within a larger scene where there were other houses and trees that I have decided to remove from the frame. The central view of the hills was definitely what I wanted to portray, but I could not do it shooting cause I had with me just wide angle 🙂

Then I made a color correction to change color cast of this image, which will be the subject of my next tutorial, so stay tuned! I applied dodge and burn through the trees and the most darken areas, with TTS Fast Panel I launched orton effect to give to the hills and a soft glow effect with a bit of contrast. After adding details in the whole frame I adjusted contrast and this is it!

I hope you will find this information usefull, if you have any tips or comments, write it as well. I love to hear it from you 🙂

Lake Carezza near Bolzano was a pleasant surprise that I met along my way. It is a small alpine lake located in the Val d’Ega, about 25 km from Bolzano. It is nestled between thick forests of trees and is located under the massive of Latemar, which is reflected in its crystal clear water. Lake Carezza is known for its beautiful colors and why people who lives in this place call it the “rainbow lake”

The entire circumference of the lake is surrounded by a fence, and the lake is located a few meters below this. It ‘a beautiful lake to admire but very difficult to photograph, in fact any shot does not do it justice. During my shots I have sought to emphasize the reflections that were in the water and the massive Latemar which stood in the background, but it took me long to find an interesting spot from where shoot 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

As I said in my previous post, I was with a D90, so I could not take more than 3 bracketed shots, so I chose to take a series (-1, 0 + 1) and (-2, 0, +2) separate. With Photoshop  I have used the set (-1, 0 + 1) and +2  exposure from the other set, cause the photo was very dark view of the shortage of light.

I blended all exposures with the luminosity masks, then I made some color correction on the green and the yellow. I used dodge and burn to lighten the darker parts of the trees and increase highlights on the mountain. With midtones masks I set contrasts on the frame and with Fast Panel I increased details over the picture, also applied orton effect to darken a bit and create a glow effect. As final I set contrast, shadows, and highlights again to balance the image
