Bamboo

Bamboo

I love photographing forests, and the light that filters through them trees. Bamboo forests are even more fascinating given the size of the stems that once surround them

After visiting the famous Arashiyama bamboo forest two years ago in Japan, I no longer had the opportunity to admire this kind of forests until I found this one

In the city center of Rome there is a very well preserved botanical garden, the structure depends on the Department of Environmental Biology of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and and hosts over 3000 different plant species. Inside the botanic garden there is too a small but very beautiful and particular bamboo forest

All the shots you see therefore come from this location. I really like the perspective of shooting towards the sky since as mentioned above the bamboo tends to wrap you up, therefore the idea was to convey a feeling of openness towards the sky and towards the light

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured all the shots without brackets, every image is a single shot edited without the use of digital blending this time. For every image I made the same editing passages:

I increase highlights using luminosity masks, after I increased details using TTS Pro filters and with the same panel I launched orton effect and dodge and burn with I fixed all the lights over the bamboo

After increasing a color vibrance and fix the green colors similar to all the images the last touch was to increase the dark mood of the picture putting a dark vignette that gives more attention to the sky lights

I hope you will find this usefull! I love to ear that from you!

The Secret Garden

I finally go back to do some excursions in search of interesting points to photograph and I recently discovered this small waterfall that is located in a place not far from Rome

The small waterfall is located at the end of a stone building consisting of a series of ponds which in turn flow into other smaller waterfalls. The scenery surrounding this place is full of nature, a dense vegetation let a magnificent light filter over it

I take a bracketed shot series here, but I managed the shots without bringing too much hihger the exposure in oder to give to the viewer the sense of lights and shadows was here

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take 5 bracketed shots here but I blended only few exposures using TTS Pro, in particular I mainly managed the image using the darker exposures

After this I increased the yellow light coming from the sky with a warm filter applied to luminosity masks, after this I increased details selectively excluding foliage and water

I launched a orton effect as I usually do in all my pictures and I increased the color vibrance to incrase the yellow light in the sky and the beautiful green of the leafs

As final step I darkened the image a little bit to give more the sense of darkness and leave some foreground part to the viewer’s imagination

I hope you will find this usefull! I’m happy to ear this from you!

Capri

Tags :

This is a picture from 2019, I take this shot in the beautiful island of Capri this is the view o classical Faraglioni from the stairs leading to the beach in front of them

During the walk through the beach the dense vegetation does not always make it possible to see the two Faraglioni rocks in the sea but I found this opening by chance which also created an interesting compositional framing

I post this photo after a year because even this like the previous post I initially discarted it, in fact in this photo the largest rock of the two Faraglioni is covered by vegetation but it is in any case a very interesting composition

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I digital blended the shots using TTS Pro, I fixed highlights and shadow using luminosity masks. I added a warm filter to the sky using luminosity masks and color efex pro filter, than I added orton effect to create a soft dreamy effect

To lighten the dark of the foliage I used dodge and burn to lighten the shadows and light bleeding to increase the warm of the sky

After adding details on the whole image, I removed the effect on the sea and as final step, increased the contrast on the rocks

I really hope you will find this usefull! Love to ear this from you!

Afterlight

I have a beautiful remember of this afternoon when I went to this lake, the light was fantastic and the sun peeked through the clouds and the mountains

I have long been looking for a spot where I could take the beautiful reflections of the lake and I waited for the moment that the light filtered through the clouds, the colors of the lake that changed in the sunlight were beautiful and made the atmosphere warm and magical

The light intervals were really fast and I happened to lose some of them but I managed to capture this moment, the light coming from the left was much stronger than what is shown in the photo, I eliminated the lens flare using layer mask with the other expousure taken before

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Although I captured the scene in different moments of light the result of this photo is not a digital blending, I used the other shots to remove lens flare and light imperfections of the main shot but basically I worked on a single shot

I started with a variation of colors increasing the warm tones, then I raised the details by removing the effect on the reflections of the water

With orton effect I increase the sense of softness of the scene to mitigate the strongness of details throught the trees and on the mountains, I raised up the light using dodge an burn and fixed the contrast using curves applied to luminosity masks

I darkened the scene increasing the purple tones, as last step I increased sharpness on the mountain peaks and on the branches of the trees

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

From Red to Green

Here is my first photo published in 2020, for this image I resume the location of my last photo published, I am talking about the beautiful Dolomites and its incredibles scenery

These are the waterfalls of Fanes, imposing waterfalls that are located inside a gorge and can only be reached through a wide climb on the promontory which must be followed by an equally descent to see them from below

I photographed the waterfalls from the top of the promontory in front of me in order to portray as much as possible the flow of water from the source to the end

The same atmosphere of the low clouds can be seen in the upper part of the photo above the trees giving them a mysterious look

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots using digital blending to create the image to work on, the final bled is not so much far from the original shot, I just take some point of the brighter exposure to give more lights around the rock and to increase the softness of the water

I increased the yellow colours applying a warmer filter to the highlights through luminosity masks, after this details was increased using TTS Pro details effects

I fixed contast and lights around the rocks, after this I pushed up some colours like the autumn colours and the end of the waterfall to better look the amazing blue colour of the water

I also created a small vignette to give more darkness of the area around the waterfall and concentrate the viewer’s eye on the waterfall

I hope you will find this usefull. I always love to ear this from you!

The Hiding II

Some scenarios of the beautiful autumn colors that I found during my last trip to the Dolomites. On a rainy morning I captured some low-cloud scenarios on trees with autumnal colors near the Fanes Watefalls

At the end of the path that leads to these beautiful waterfalls, a gorge opens up with a great view, in front of that day I couldn’t see much of the mountain behind the clouds but my intent was to portray the trees in their beautiful colors just behind a neutral white cloud

All this clearing was exactly on the other side of the gorge but right in front of me, not was so much far I took this picture with my 24-70 captured at 46mm to get a close-up image of the trees and create a hat-effect with clouds

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For this shot no digital blending was necessary, I just used a couple of shots and make some ajustments using brush with luminosity masks

The main area affected was the trees: first I increased the luminosity using the brighter exposure and a brush, than I added details and contrast using TTS Pro and launching two effects related to this

Always with the use of luminosity masks I decreased the light in the clouds and I decreased the luminosity in the whole frame. I increased the autumn colours decreasing the opacity to 10% and I increased all the vibrance by +15% in order to give more result to greens and reds of the trees

As final step I added a small vignette to create more visibility to the trees in the center of the frame

I hope you will find this usefull. I always love to ear this from you!

Losing Sight

During the days I stay at the Dolomites, the splendid scenery of the mountain in autumn was constantly changing. Very intense days of cloudiness alternated with low clouds to rainy days, unfortunately not always all suitable for taking good photos

That afternoon I was literally surrounded by low clouds on the horizon and I took a lot of photos in this mountain scenery so particular and engaging. In this photo the clouds moving towards the forest below

It was a very beautiful atmosphere, rarely seen in the past at these levels as I said in my previous post. More photos will follow with similar scenarios of those days

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This image is a result of a digital blending with 2 exposures (of course I captured 3 but used just 2) that I blended using TTS Pro with auto blend darks function inside that instantly blend a darker exposure into a brighter exposure

After this I started edit the shot using luminosity masks correcting lighting in the sky and shadows, I also fixed contrast using midtones masks. I increased details that I partially muted with a orton effect.

I fixed up colours adding more vibrance and giving more yellow tones around the trees and the part of the mountain touched by sunlight

I made a small crop to cut off an empty space below and I made some small intervention with clone stamp tool to remove some rain drops

Last touch was to add a small vignette excluding the sky because it makes the clouds too dark

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to listen it from you!

The Golden Touch

I took this photo at sunset in a traditional Seoul village, where you get a taste of the ancient korean times while escaping from the bustling city life of modern times. The traditional garden created its peaceful ambiance outside the pavillions

At sunset a splendid light passed through all the pavillions inside the park, so I used the sun’s rays to capture the sunlight and its rays at sunset. All the interior in the garden had a beautiful oriental atmosphere of tranquility, it seemed very far from the city but it is inside it

Inside the houses are arranged to help guests understand the daily lives of the past, and the clean, traditional houses, as well as their antique items provide a great photo op. To protect these fragile heritages, only one of the hanok houses is open to the public

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 5 bracketed shots in order to extend the dynamic range as much I can, later I blended my shots using my panel. I increased details and highlights selectively using luminosity masks, than always using TTS Pro I set the contrast over the frame

I launched dodge and burn to give more light around the leafs and I increased the yellow colours using a warm filter applied to highlights and shadows

I increased the warmyth using color efex pro filters, after this I created a orton effect to give more soft look on the sunlight

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Hands Lifted

Waiting for my next trip I spend a day last week in the Tuscia region. It was a name given to the old region of Etruria now named conventionally has the name of the region around Viterbo

Here there is a beautiful beech forest, located on Monte Cimino. The beech forest and is a pleasant walk (especially the summer) to go through these beautiful centenary trees, very suggestive the lights that filter through the branches during the morning

I found these two trees that they had a shape almost representing hands towards the sky, where a strong morning light filtered creates beautiful plays of light

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I edited the single shot with luminosity masks, used to adjust contrast lights and darkness, no blend here was possible because I was freehand and the wind moved the leaves

I increased details using TTS PRO ,created two warm filters (highlights and shadows) applied to luminosity masks to give more yellows tones to trees and leaves

I launched an orton effect to give more sens of glow in the frame, plus to intensity the light I used the glow tool with a brush around the main lights area

With the use of dodge and burn I reduced some strong lights around the trees and as final step I added a vignette to give more prominence to the light coming to the sky I darkened some rocks with too much lights on them, I adjusted contrast using it applied to luminosity masks

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

The Autumn Path

Tags :

This is a photo taken last autumn during my tour along the Friuli Venezia Giulia, were days of heavy rain and very adverse weather but during those days I could admire beautiful autumn landscapes

It often happened that I stopped with the car along the routes to get off to take pictures. Among these landscapes that have impressed me there is certainly this view of the valley of Raccolana wrapped in the fog and the colors of autumn, down the walking path through the woods

What struck me was the mix of colors not only present in the valley between the green and the red that blend the leaves and the trees but also the perfect meeting between the warm and the cold light at the end of the day

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take this as single shot, so I edited the image by using luminosity masks applied to curves adjustment layer, without any blend

Using my panel TTS PRO, I launched autumn colours to increase the red look of the autumn foliage, with the same tool I launched high details to increase the details over the frame

My next step was to give more warm look to the photo so I applied a warm filter to the highlights, after this I launched orton effect  to give a more soft look to the landscape

Using dodge and burn applied to luminosity masks I give more lights over the fog, after this I fixed contrast between highlighs and darks

Latest steps was to decrease the general lights and to add a soft sharpen to the final frame

I always hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear this from you!
