I finally go back to do some excursions in search of interesting points to photograph and I recently discovered this small waterfall that is located in a place not far from Rome

The small waterfall is located at the end of a stone building consisting of a series of ponds which in turn flow into other smaller waterfalls. The scenery surrounding this place is full of nature, a dense vegetation let a magnificent light filter over it

I take a bracketed shot series here, but I managed the shots without bringing too much hihger the exposure in oder to give to the viewer the sense of lights and shadows was here

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take 5 bracketed shots here but I blended only few exposures using TTS Pro, in particular I mainly managed the image using the darker exposures

After this I increased the yellow light coming from the sky with a warm filter applied to luminosity masks, after this I increased details selectively excluding foliage and water

I launched a orton effect as I usually do in all my pictures and I increased the color vibrance to incrase the yellow light in the sky and the beautiful green of the leafs

As final step I darkened the image a little bit to give more the sense of darkness and leave some foreground part to the viewer’s imagination

I hope you will find this usefull! I’m happy to ear this from you!

How to Recover Highlights and Shadows Selectively

Tags :

A very effective method that I often use to recover highlights and shadows selectively in Photoshop is through the help of curves adjustment layer that give the possibility to better manage the light according to the widest needs.

Curves adjustment layer are one of my fav adjustments, very versatiles and easy to apply. To make a curve adjustment layer and use them selectively it is possible to use a layer mask and with the use of a paintbrush, mask out the areas that we do not want to affect by this edit.

In this tutorial we’ll see something deeper and more specific to how to recover highlights and shadows selectively in a easy way

Let’s see how to do it:

1. Create a new Curves Adjustment Layer and adjust the curves as your needs. In the example image I need to decrease the highlights of the sky so I lowered the curve

2. Navigate to Image>Apply Image and put the settings as follows: since I need to decrease the highlights the following settings arefor the highlights, but if you need to apply them to the shadows put the flag on invert

3. The curves adjustment layer is applied selectively! Check the layer thumbnail to check the selective application

4. To softner the effect change the curves adjustment layer blending mode to soft light or simply decrease the opacity

Another very easy way to create with just one click the same kind of edit is through the use of the the effects in my TTS Pro Panel that have 2 specific effects dedicated to this

So these were the simple steps to recover highlights and shadows selectively in Photoshop, as you can see it is simple and quick to apply. If you need further informations or you want to tell me what is the technique you use for recover the highlights and shadows please let me know with a direct message or with a comment below. I’m always happy to respond to you!

The Golden Gai

The Golden Gai is a truly magical place that is located in Kabuki-cho, the Shinjuku district a place that never sleeps in Tokyo

It is an area with many small bars that accommodate five to ten customers each and are really very small. The streets that surround the golden gai are all alleys and is famous for being the meeting place for artists, musician and actors

Although it has been a couple of nights at the Golden Gai in search of of a particular photographic point that struck my attention and I found this colorful and characteristic alley that contain the essence of Golden Gai

Despite is a place of small bars inside Golden Gai  the atmosphere was really calm in the streets, while if you enter one of these bars you find a completely different atmosphere of cheerful people

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

These are single shots images, I started working them opening the images in camera raw to get the major adjustments to white balance highlights and shadows

Once opened the images in Photoshop I used TTS PRO to launch dodge and burn with I decreased the lights of the lamps and increased the lights around the darker areas. Final steps was to increase a bit the details and fix contrasts.

Siena Oculus

I love Siena, I come here about once a year, it’s a small city that offers a lot to visit and where you can eat very well 🙂 there are also lots of photographt spots here

One of the most popular shots in Siena is this, certainly I have not invented anything but it must be said that it is an interesting pov. I’m talking about the view of the Mangia Tower taken from the main entrance of the public building, once you enter the atrium just look up to get the view of the architectural perspective

I shot on this location at various times of the day and this photo with this light and those clouds, was the condition that I liked the most. Taken handheld with 3 bracketed shots

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I used luminosity masks to blend images and lighten the darker parts of building, with TTS Fast Panel I launched Dodge and burn to lighten the lights coming to the windows and emphatize this effect, from the panel I also launch details and sharpen

The picture needed a small color fix, so I adjust the yellow colors and decrease the lights coming from the hole of the building and the sky as well

I added contrast using midtones and after this I decreased the noise visible on the black parts, as final step I launched a hard vignette to give more contrast and look at the central part of the frame.

I hope you will find this usefull! I’m always happy to hear it from you!

The Valley of Silan

Here is another waterfall shot coming from the Veneto region, we are in the area around Bassano del Grappa where is this small waterfall in the valley Valrovina. Watching some pictures from the web, it seemed very interesting and so I decided to go to this small resort to take some photos

This spot is a well-maintained tourist trail that leads to this waterfall, the path continues to high following the course of the creek. There are several stones along the river where I set up with my tripod to shot at the waterfall

I wanted to bring in the frame as much as possible the view of the creek behind, which with the light of the trees was really very beautiful. I took the photo with an nd64 filter, taking some lighter exposures to try to light up some very dark rock areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This shot coming from a blend of 2 exposure, I blend the best take of the waterfall with another overexposed shot, to bring up all the lights around the rocks

Using Dodge and burn was very useless to recover some underexposed part and increse lighting. After a increase of details I launched orton effect to create a soft dreamy effect, I like so much the glow between the trees on the top of the picture

To complete this work I increased yellow colors. As final I fixed contrast using luminosity mask applied to midtones decreasing the darkest parts to avoid to make too under the darken part of the picture

I hope you will find this usefull. I always love to hear this from you
