The Eternal Sunset

The Eternal Sunset

For my opinion this is one of the most representative and fascinating sights of Rome, it captures all the essence of its daytime activity in the middle between everyday life and the timeless charm of the eternal city. This is perhaps my favorite spot in Rome, it is very representative of the city, beautiful and colorful at sunset. From this spot it’s possible to capture many elements including the dome of San Pietro and the river Tevere flowing down

I’m talking about the location of Sant’Angelo bridge, a photographic spot that contains at least other  3 spots inside, from here it is possible to shoot towards the dome of St. Peter as you see in this picture, go down on the banks of the Tevere to take the castle from below or with a little patience and many tourists in less do the front view of the castle 🙂

This photo dates back to last week where I decided to go here to do some test shots with some equipment I recently received, to test the products. The fact is that probably that was the windiest and coldest day of the year and on that bridge to photograph I literally froze 🙂

But finally we come to talk about the photo, for the first time I shot this part of Rome with a medium-distance lens my sigma 24-70 for the occasion mounted on my camera between the bars at the bottom of the bridge. Usually I took this picture with a wide angle, this is the first time that the first time I take a closer shot and I must say that I prefer to a wider view. The first floor on this part of the city is very fascinating for me

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I start as usually blendind the images using luminosity masks, obtained the base shot I used clon stamp tool to remove some dust spot and some other little unwanted element in the picture. Using TTS Fast Panel  I launched high details effect to increase all the details in the picture, removing the effect on the water flow in the foreground.

Always using my panel and with the use of luminosity masks I applied contrast to the curves on midtones and darks to create a specific contrast per area. With orton effect I created a soft look of glow in the frame. Using a cold filter I increased the blue hour colors in the sky applying at the same time a warm filter to mediate the effect, I also used dodge and burn effect around the Tevere bridges and the lightings of the city, to decrease/increase luminosity selectively, in particular some points like the tree and other dark parts were very difficult to lighten even using darks luminosity masks

I always hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear it from you!

The famous Trevi fountain with a vertical shot, I took this photo on a Saturday afternoon while I was around the city. The Trevi fountain is one of the most visited places in the city of Rome, even during the day just approaching this fountain is very difficult, the entire fountain is surrounded by thousands of tourists every day that make photos and selfie at all

It is a beautiful fountain, which catches you when you are in front of it, I recommend it to everyone to see it but to enjoy the full visit it is better to go here early in the morning or at night

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Image obtained by a bracketed shot taken handheld, I blended the images using luminosity masks and I applied details and orton effect using TTS Fast Panel

I increased contrast using midtones and darks, I decreased the yellow color cast on the fountain using hue/saturation, With dodge and burn I made some adjustments on the fountain and on the water, as final touch I applied a little vignette to emphatize the central point

I hope you will find this informations usefull, if you have any tips or question about it write to me. I’m always happy to hear it on you!

Thirst for Light

This is Porta Latina, a road that leads to the most famous circus maximus to the ancient roman walls, on the left  the little chapel of St. Giovanni in Oleo, one inside which is painted the torture of St. Giovanni

Near the church there is a park and the whole area is surrounded by a beautiful green. I took this photo in the full sunset, taking advantage of the direction of the sun and a small column beside the chapel that “split in two” the direction of the rays

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For the first thing I remove all the lens flare using other shots I take with my finger in front of the camera of the sun direction. Using a large dynamic range of shots with luminosity masks I managed sunrays close to underexposed shot. I added orton effect and with dodge an burn I made the main adjustments in the dark areas

With TTS Fast Panel I launched details and sharpening, I also increased foreground details using darks masks applied to high pass filters to make it better visible. As the final touch I fixed some contrasts in the midtones and in the brights using curves always applied to luminosity masks

I hope you will find this usefull, I’m always happy to ear feedback from you

The Holy Way

For someone, it may sound strange, but when I photograph my city it means I’ve been short supply of photos to work 😀
I’m actually waiting for the next trip to make some new shots, in the meantime I go to Rome that always offers great locations to be photographed, one of this in my opinion is precisely the “Via Sacra“, located between the Coliseum square and the Imperial Forums was in Antiquity is the most important street of ancient Rome

I take this shot after the closing of the “roman forum” to get fewer tourist on the road, the summer sunset time allows you to reconcile a beautiful location with a less busy street than usual with the sunset in front of you

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take several shots during the sunset, I make a blend using luminosity masks. After this, I photomerged the resulting frame with another shot with more foreground to englarge the view of the viewer

I launched dodge and burn to increse light on the rocks in the foreground and to darken some part of the sky. After applied details and sharpen using my panel, I launched orton effect to increase glows and darks

I used a warm filter in the sky and a LAB Color in the whole frame. As the final touch I increase contrasts applied to luminosity masks and a vignette to emphasize the central light

Forum Magnum

Giuseppe Sapori - Forum Magnum

For my opinion this is one of the top spots in Rome to take photos, the location is easy to find and what you see from here is the typical view of Roman Imperial Forum

I did this photo at the first sunset lights with 5 bracketed shots, the light coming from the bottom of the forum was very high and dimmed the foreground. For this kind of takes I also use a high d-lighting on my camera,  why it provides a valid in-shot contribution and allows to have a clearer picture on the shadow areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended all selected exposures with luminosity masks, starting from the darken to the brightest image. I added contrast using darks2 curves and details plus sharpening in the whole frame. I used dodge and burn to lighten some darker part of the foreground and lighten some other too brights long the sunrays

After some correction of color cast, I increased sunset colors using a warm filter. I remove some noise visible on the foreground, and fixed light and darks as the final touch using luminosity mask  applied to curves

The Path of Glory

St. Angelo bridge shot taken from the banks of the Tevere river, this is a picture I took several times and is one spot that I like very much, in fact, this area is easy to find, a good point without the thousands of tourists who are in any other spot of Rome. This time I chose a time of golden hour on enough enlightened, I also benefited from good reflexes on the river and a shoal inside, rarely seen in the winter months. I would lower this to keep me with the shot but there were too many weeds at the base of the river, in fact some of them you can see the bottom 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots togheder, discarding the most overexposed exposure. With luminosity masks, I make some adjustments to the frame adding more contrast with darks and midtones masks. Using Fast Panel I increased details, applied orton effect decreasing opacity around 8% and applying dodge and burn to lighten some parts of the bridge and darken the castle. With hue/saturation I adjust the yellows and make some color adjustments.

I also used camera raw to increase selectively clarity around bridge, reflection and shoal. As final I applied a small vignette selectively removing darks in the highlights as to increase darkness and contrasts only in the foreground, because otherwise, the sky would take a dark blue variant that would be surreal. I hope you find this information useful, are always welcome your opinions on how you’d worked this photo

I took this HDR while walking to the center of Rome casually, this church located not far from the famous Teatro Marcello, the church name is Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli and it is a very old church dating back to 1600. Inside undoubtedly affects the altar with a depiction of a Marian icon and the top features of the rosettes that characterize the main lighting of the church.
