The beautiful colors of the Cilento cliffs are one of my favorite spots in this area. This year I have been several times here and every time I managed to capture great sunsets and as many beautiful colors. The mountains are not far from the sea here and this creates a beautiful atmosphere at sunset

When I took this photo in the evening the sea was very rough, I put my tripod on a rock sheltered from the high water and started shooting with the colors of the golden hour until almost complete darkness

Capturing the entire event allowed me to take the whole dynamic range of the scene. In particular the brightly colored sky is the result of the yellow colors of the sunset when it was to turn towards the blue, having more series of shots at my disposal it allowed me to protect the yellows by exploiting the beautiful purple colors of “evening”

At the same time the long exposure of the water was captured in another series of shots that I used on the main frame to edit

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For this shot I makes 2 different blends: one for a series captured during the golde hour and another with another exposure series captured during the blue hour, so with more darkness.

I selected the shot with the golden hour and I used the blue hour blend to make some adjustments in the main frame, so I used it to blend, water and some part of the sky that i want to replace with a more dark image

I added details and I increased yellow colours in the sky using a warm filter applied to luminosity masks. I used dodge and burn on the rocks to make some lights effect in the direction of the sun, I always used dodge and burn to soften som lights coming from the clouds. I added orton effect and I increased the contrast using TTS Pro that have this function applied to luminosity masks in order to create a series of curves easy to adjust

I fixed the finale exposure and I increased the shadows to mitigate the darkess coming from the foreground rocks

As final step I made some colours increase adjustments, pushing up the vibrance but reducing the blues becoming too strong

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Another waterfall from my recent trip to South Korea, the water of this waterfall ends directly into the sea, I never saw a waterfall like that and I must say that it was very cool photography sunset from a beach with a waterfall on the right 🙂

Upon my arrival I found some people at the foot of the waterfall who were practically on the beach, I would have preferred a frontal view of the waterfall that fell directly into the sea but I had to give it up for a more distant and covered view. At the beginning I tried to photograph from a closer and more central point but it was practically impossible because of all the water spashes in front of

In the picture it doesn’t look like a big waterfall but I can assure you that it was pretty big and had a considerable water flow, so I decided for a vertical shot farther back behind some big rocks (it was one of the few points where you could be without it to be wet)

I captured a series of exposure to make this shot, without the use of practically unusable filters, the water you see moved was captured by longer exposures

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots using TTS Pro with some exposures taken from before the golden hour till the blue hour, I was able to take the sunlight I like with this

I added details on the frame and I increased the warmth applied to shadows using luminosity masks, I made some adjustments with clone stamp tool to remove some water spot on the lens and I cleaned the scene from other small spots

With the help of dodge and burn I incresed the lighting over the rocks near me and I lightened the water coming from the waterfall. I added a orton effect because I like this kind of effect on waterfalls.

As final steps I decreased the general exposure of the frame just a bit to emphatize the lighting coming from the sunset

I hope you will find this usefull. I’ts a pleasure to ear this from you!

From the beautiful beaches of Cilento, I come back with a photo from a different perspective of my favorite beach of this area. To take this picture I used the distortion of my wide angle to create a more impactful effect in the foreground

To take advantage of the distortion it is always good to consider the corners of the image to avoid falling lines on the horizon. I love vertical photos but the management of distortions when you want to highlight a subject in the foreground may not always be easy

In my tutorial 7 composition guidelines for better landscape photography I insered Mind the Corners, to remember the presence of spots or other distracting elements in the picture that could focus away the viewer’s attention, the falling lines are one of them so always check it when you use lens distortion for you shots

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 5 exposure bracketing series that I blended using TTS PRO.I used an additional shot to capture the sea with a long exposure that I used to make the water more soft

With the complete blend, I straighten up the horizon and removed some water spots on the lens. With the use of luminosity masks, I decreased the highlights and I increased the shadows in order to make better visibles the stones around the beach

I increased contrast and I added some blue colors to the image using a cold filter. I added a very soft orton effect and I used dodge and burn to increase the lights over the rocks and decrease the luminosity of the sea

Always using my panel I used the glow tool to make other adjustments and creating a manual vignette over the image

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

I took this photo in a beach located in the Gulf of Cilento, I love this area of Italy and very often I spend a few days here in the summer. The Cilento area is located in the southern part of Campania and is a UNESCO heritage area that offers not only beautiful beaches but also small mountains, archaeologic areas and natural parks

Although we are along the coast, the proximity of the hills to the sea, makes that in the evening, the sky around the mountains, is often clouded; creating interesting photographic spots not so common on the coasts

I make this shot in the final hours of sunset, to capture the movement of the water I used a 3-stop ND filter to avoid exposures that were too long for each series of shots

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 5 exposure bracketing for this that I blended using my panel TTS PRO, to the blended image I added contrast and details

I fixed lights over the rocks and over the horizon using luminosity masks, than I enhanced colours using a cold filter applied to highlights and a bit less to the shadows

I boosted the colours of the sunset creating a mask for yellow, red and magenta to give more warm to the sky after this I applied a soft orton effect and a soft dodge and burn to the rocks and to the water

As final step I created a soft vignette to give more energy to the central scene

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

In one of my latest posts I talked about the valley of Ferriere, an enchanting place surrounded by nature that saw its period of greatest activity during the production of paper, where many paper mills in this valley were active and functioning

Today those paper mills are no longer there but all the remains of their buildings are still here, now the valley of Ferriere is aa very green wood full of waterways. During my journey I also found this waterfall which is located in a basin further downstream

The light was a bit strong and filtered through the branches, this meant that numerous contrasts were created between the areas struck by the sun and the darker ones. I captured this with a single shot and a 6-stop nd filter

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I edited the single shot with luminosity masks, used to adjust contrast lights and darkness

I increased the glow effect using TTS PRO applying an orton effect  and increasing the warm colors on the highlights

I also increased the lights coming from the highlights to give more enery to the warm between the trees.

I darkened some rocks with too much lights on them, I adjusted contrast using it applied to luminosity masks

I adjusted the yellow colors and the vibrance of the frame, the final step was to add a very soft vignette to give more impact to the waterfall

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

The Fisherman’s View

From many years I wanted to visit these places and this year finally I managed to find a few days to photograph the Cinque Terre. This one is the beautiful port of Riomaggiore, one of the most photographed spots in Cinque Terre. The area around the port has a unique charm, the colors of the houses are very bright surrounded by rocks overlooking the sea

It is one of the most famous and beautiful places in the area, although the town is very small hundreds of tourists every day roam the small streets of this village. I decided to make a long exposure and take advantage of the boats that were near the rocks to counter the movement of boats and of the clouds. I made several photos in this spot and in fact this will be just the first of a series of photos taken in Riomaggiore that I will present in the coming weeks. Stay tuned…

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For this image I used a single long exposure shot. I edited the image using luminosity masks fixing the lights and darks. I removed some ghost people moving on the harbour than I increased contrast applying curves to midtones

With TTS Fast Panel I increased details, launched orton effect and dodge and burn with I darkened some part of the sky and lightened some other dark spots. Using a warm filter I increased the yellows in the sky using this technique I fixed color cast than I darkened a little bit the image increasing the colors on the buildings

As always I hope you will find this post usefull. I always love to ear this from you!

Morning Glow

Tags :

I captured this beach in the morning twilight, the photo is a long exposure of 20 seconds I did using a filter nd64 (6 stops). Cilento area has beautiful landscapes made up of mountains but also many beaches

When I take thi shot I was impressed and Ireally liked this beach, the view of the sea that was lost in the morning glow of the clouds on the horizon

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a sinlge exposure so I don’t blend images but I made a ETTR, so the final picture was a bit overexposed but I used luminosity masks to decrease lights in the highlights and in the foreground to reach the effect I want from this

I  used Dodge and burn  to made some adjustments on the rocks and on the water, using my panel, I increased details and sharpen and by using a blue filter I increased the blue and purpe colors in the picture to give more cold look. With orton effect I increased the glow effect in the frame trying to give a dreamy look at the picture

Last edits was to increase contrast to give a more dark look on the rocks, emphatizing lights using again dodge and burn, the latest touch was adding a small vignette to the borders

I really hope you will like this and you will find this information usefull. I’m happy to hear this from you 🙂

The Rocky House

I love Cilento, a mountainous area in southern Italy located in the province of Salerno that also offers beaches, waterfalls, rivers and characteristic villages. When I return to these areas I never miss the opportunity to take from this location, a house built on the rocks. I enjoyed this spot for many years now and every time I return to these places cannot miss the opportunity to take photos in that place

I made this shot at sunset with my 64 nd filter to capture all the water movements on the rocks, since there was still light high I did not use a value too high the shot is in fact of 30 seconds made with f9 in the direction of sunset

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I don’t make a digital blend for this, with the use of luminosity masks I simply fixed the lights and darks to make it more clear and have a image neutral. With  Dodge and burn I made some adjustments on the darker parts of the rocks and the brighter parts of the sky, after this with clone stamp tool I remove some spots and a small boat on the horizon that becomes too blurry. With my panel I launched high details, orton effect to make some glow effect and sharpen

With luminosity masks applied to a cold filter I add some blue colors at the sky. I fixed contrast saving the rocks located below avoiding that become too darks, to make this just remove from a midtone selection the darks selection. As final touch I increased a little more the highlights and created a small vignette to emphatize the sunset

As always I hope you will find this usefull, I’m happy to hear this from you 🙂

The Valley of Silan

Here is another waterfall shot coming from the Veneto region, we are in the area around Bassano del Grappa where is this small waterfall in the valley Valrovina. Watching some pictures from the web, it seemed very interesting and so I decided to go to this small resort to take some photos

This spot is a well-maintained tourist trail that leads to this waterfall, the path continues to high following the course of the creek. There are several stones along the river where I set up with my tripod to shot at the waterfall

I wanted to bring in the frame as much as possible the view of the creek behind, which with the light of the trees was really very beautiful. I took the photo with an nd64 filter, taking some lighter exposures to try to light up some very dark rock areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This shot coming from a blend of 2 exposure, I blend the best take of the waterfall with another overexposed shot, to bring up all the lights around the rocks

Using Dodge and burn was very useless to recover some underexposed part and increse lighting. After a increase of details I launched orton effect to create a soft dreamy effect, I like so much the glow between the trees on the top of the picture

To complete this work I increased yellow colors. As final I fixed contrast using luminosity mask applied to midtones decreasing the darkest parts to avoid to make too under the darken part of the picture

I hope you will find this usefull. I always love to hear this from you
