Let it Snow

I found this photo from the photo album of my last trip to the Dolomites, almost a year ago now … an incredible snowy landscape and a magnificent backdrop of the Friulian Dolomites

I remember spending most of the day in this location from late morning until almost evening since the sky offered the most disparate facets that day, starting from an overcast sky up to openings full of wonderful light like this one

I made this shot with a focus stacking on only two points, foreground and background, capturing a series of exposures for each type of photo to capture as much dynamic range as possible

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started with a digital blending between the two series of shots, than I merged the images into Photoshop in order to obtain one image with all focused points

I made the major adjustments using  luminosity masks on highlights, shadows and contrasts. I applied high details filters using TTS Pro, I also launched orton effect and glow tool in order to increase the glowing atmosphere of the image

I fixed color cast and I pushed up the warmth of the whole image increasing vibrance and yellow tones. With dodge and burn I lightened some areas around the trees and on the mountains

I darkened a bit the whole frame and I created some lighting spot on the main areas of interest using brush, as final step I a fixed the lasts lights using levels to better balance the image

I really hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

This image comes from a freehand single shot during my last excursion along the dolomites. It is beautiful to see how the light filters through the mountains, leaving behind you a glimpse of a blue sky veiled with rays of yellow lights

Although from a first glance the forest and the mountains may seem on the same level they are actually at two completely different depths and during my editing with Photoshop I tried to increase these visual differences by increasing the contrasts and adjusting the exposures in this sense

I tried to let the viewer focus his attention on the scenery at the bottom but without decreasing the importance of what constitutes the forest at the foot of the mountain

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

As said at the beginning of this post this is a single shot, so for this photo I did not do digital blending but I only used the luminosity masks to correct lights, contrast and colors

I increased the light effect coming through the sky with dodge and burn and I launched orton effect as I usually do in every my lanscape. After a small push up of yellows tones, I decreased the blacks and the shadows in order to give more prominence to the mountain

With the use of clone stamp tool, I removed some bushes on the bottom of the picture that moves attention away and I manually create a vignette using the glow tool you can find insid my TTS Pro panel

I increased the colors increasing vibrance and a small decrease of expoure as last touch

I hope you will find this usefull! I’m happy to ear this from you!

Civita

Tags :

Here we are with the first post of this 2019, what you see is the now famous Civita di Bagnoregio, a location that is not far from Rome and which is in my opinion one of the most beautiful photo spots in central Italy

It is located downstream of the gullies, originally these valleys around had to be sweeter and more accessible and were crossed by an ancient road that connected the valley of the river Tevere to the lake of Bolsena

The morphology of the territory has been strongly influenced by erosion by atmospheric agents, by streams but also by deforestation, for this reason Civita di Bagnoregio is also famous for being nicknamed the “city that dies”

Now the town is offcially unhabited but during the day many activity of restaurants and local shops opens in it for tourism. Civita can only be reached through a reinforced concrete pedestrian bridge built in 1965

Coming to the photo the best position to photograph it is from the hill in front of it where you can see very well the city and the whole valley around, I made a series of shots during sunset, moving between the various areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take 3 exposure brackets over the hill in front of Civita and I used the brighter exposure to lighten some part of the hill and of the town. I increased details using TTS PRO, I decreased the blue colours to the horizon with the mountain at the bottom and darken the light tones.

I launched a soft orton effect and fixed contrast and I applied two color lookup effects with opacity to 15%. As a last steps I launched the sharpen  and used a small vignette to darken the edges always using my panel

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear this from you!

A Night in the Village

Tags :

Second image from Takayama village in Japan, I took this second picture a few minutes after that of my previous post going to photograph the bridge in his front view, the image so quiet in the village at sunset illuminated by these yellow lanterns was a very impressive element for me.

Even the contrast between the yellow lights and the blue twilight has greatly attracted my curiosity, I love the blue hour for these reasons. I captured this image with a very low light, so at ISO 100 the shutter speed was 30 seconds

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single shot, so this time no blending was done for this picture. Anyway I always used luminosity masks  to fix the lights in the sky, over the lanterns and set the right contrast. I set the proportions and slightly straightened the photo, with the clone stamp I removed a spot at the top

With the glow tool  I made some lights adjustments on the bridge to increase the light and give more warm over the area under the lanters. I gave a soft orton effect and I added a warm filter to the foreground to give more the impression of  lighting coming from the lanterns. I raised up the shadows with luminosity masks and as a last touch I created a small vignette to increase the sense of darkness

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Resia

Tags :

I always wanted to go to visit this place, so I took advantage of my last trip to Trentino to reach it. The lake Resia is one of the most fascinating places in the Alp, the bell tower is all that remains of the ancient city of Curon Venosta that was submerged by water after the construction of a dam

Although in summer it is nice to see the bell tower emerging from the water  but in winter it is nice to be able to reach this ancient bell tower on foot

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For this image I used a single shot so I did not use the luminosity masks to make a digital blending but to fix the light shadows and contrasts in the image. I fixed the color cast giving a slight imprint of yellow to light

After incrased details using  TTS Fast Panel I added contrast in the fram using luminosity masks applied to midtones curves. As final step I fixed the last lights using levels adjustment layer

I hope you will find this informations usefull. I’m always happy to ear it from you!

Morning Glow

Tags :

I captured this beach in the morning twilight, the photo is a long exposure of 20 seconds I did using a filter nd64 (6 stops). Cilento area has beautiful landscapes made up of mountains but also many beaches

When I take thi shot I was impressed and Ireally liked this beach, the view of the sea that was lost in the morning glow of the clouds on the horizon

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a sinlge exposure so I don’t blend images but I made a ETTR, so the final picture was a bit overexposed but I used luminosity masks to decrease lights in the highlights and in the foreground to reach the effect I want from this

I  used Dodge and burn  to made some adjustments on the rocks and on the water, using my panel, I increased details and sharpen and by using a blue filter I increased the blue and purpe colors in the picture to give more cold look. With orton effect I increased the glow effect in the frame trying to give a dreamy look at the picture

Last edits was to increase contrast to give a more dark look on the rocks, emphatizing lights using again dodge and burn, the latest touch was adding a small vignette to the borders

I really hope you will like this and you will find this information usefull. I’m happy to hear this from you 🙂

Follow the Leaf

Giusppe Sapori - Follow the leaf

This is from Revine Lago, a place not far from Treviso, is a small norther italy town overlooking this lake. The whole area around the lake is not very easy to walk and it was not easy to find a place to shoot, the entire lake tour was in fact filled with bumps or crowded boats that did not make life easy

Fortunately I found this little glimpse but I needed a subject for my composition, so I take this big leaf near the water and I put it in front of me. The wind that was present that day, among other things, moved the leaf away from me so I was all time adjusting it with a branch to not to let it go 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take several exposures but when I start editing I decided to use only one, the wind it was moving the leaf and the tree so it has been really difficult to blend the exposures. I decided to use luminosity masks applied to one single exposure to reduce lights in the sky and add contrast in the foreground

With TTS Fast Panel I launched high details, sharpen and dodge and burn with I pushed up light in the leaf and fixed luminosity in the mountain. I applied a yellow photo filter to enchance yellows and better mix the blue hour, I made some color adjustment to reduce a too strong blue  in the sky using luminosity masks applied to hue/saturation

As usual I hope you will find this usefull. Your feedback is always welcome!

Frostbite Touch 3

Giuseppe Sapori - Frostbite Touch 3

This is a old find from my pictures from the lake Calaita in Trentino, I  left behind this photo, which deserved to be processed. I really appreciated the beauty of this lake during winter with its frosts, definitely come back next winter in this beautiful place to take new pictures here

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The workflow of this shot is similar of the previous posts. I blended the shots with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast and then with my panel  I launched high details and sharpen to increase details in the picture, I used dodge and burn to increase the light around the main rocks, the nearest fields and the trees.

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and increased darks to make uniform light in the frame. After this I used orton effect to create a glow contrasted effect, I also increased contrast using darks 2 applied to curves adjustment layer.

With the help of hue/saturation I decreased blue on the top of the picture.  I increasesed vibrance using LAB color technique and darkened border of the frame using a vignette tool. I hope you will find this information usefull, for every tips or question write to me. I always love to hear you 🙂

Light Hunters

Giuseppe Sapori - Light Hunters

The Tre Cime of Lavaredo in the last light of the day, I made this photo at the end of the day spent in the Tre Cime park, returning from Locatelli refuge.

My intentions was to create a picture of the Tre Cime it was very dark in the twilight setting. I take this from a long exposure with my ND3 filter, this  helped to give me a final image that was with low higlights

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I used a overexposed picture to lighten some parts of the rocks the feet of Tre Cime with luminosity masks, apart from that, this picture was worked only with a single shot. I launched TTS Fast Panel to increse details and sharpen with its filters, always with the panel I launched orton effect to create a smart glow effect.

With dodge and burn I lightened some part of the rocks in the foreground and I created some lights effect near the mountains. With the help of luminosity masks, I increased contrast and I fixed highlighs and darks. As final touch with color efex pro I launched darken lighten center filter to create a vignette effect accentuating the Tre Cime

As usual I hope you will find this usefull. Your feedback is always welcome!
