The Hills of Val d’Orcia Pt.2

The Hills of Val d’Orcia Pt.2

Tags :

This week I continue with a collection of images captured in the suggestive Val d’Orcia in Tuscany. Side the images published last week are added these, some taken in very famous locations in the area and also many of these captured with a telephoto that in this area helps a lot to exalt the beauty of the place and his landscapes

This second collection it is entirely captured from the top of some hills, details of some very suggestive farms at various times of the day, I love the alternation of light and the contrasts that are created by playing among the details of the hills and trees

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This series is composed by single shots so no digital blendings was done for this images. As the previous post I applied the same “treatment” for these shots: increase details, applied a warm filter and decreased some highlights in the sky

For some shots I also applied a soft orton effect, I increased a little bit contrast and fixed colours using my panel TTS Pro. As final step I applied a soft vignette to all the images to give more prominence to the main subject

The Angels Stronghold

From the same famous location of my latest post here’s a new angle of Castel Sant’Angelo, this time with the famous composition from behid of the bridge leading to the castle. This is one of the best spot to capture the castle with the statues of angels visible from below the bridge with the lighting of the street lamps that light up at dusk

Over the years I’ve done this shot many times and every time I tried to capture different conditions. This time I stay here during the golden hour of a rainy afternoon, when the sky open again after bad weather

I made this using bracketed shots to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene and to master the lights an colors in the sky

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I digital blended the bracketed shots using TTS Pro using auto blend function, a very fast and at the same time accurate way to digital blend multple exposures. I increased sky colours using a warm filter applied selectively to the scene

After this I increased details removing the effect on the sky and on the water, I added some glow using the proper filter of color efex pro, than using the glow tool

I fixed yellow colour luminosity and saturation, than I incrase the colour vibrance of the frame and as final step I added a soft vignette and decrease slightly the luminosity

Here we are finally with a new image after a period of absence due to the restrictions that we all know by now. I return to post with a location that I particularly love in my city while waiting to plan the next outdoor trips

After a rainy afternoon the sky opened with beautiful colours I took the opportunity to go out to shoot and find some interesting alternative perspective of Castel Sant’Angelo like this one taking advantage of the puddle on the foreground

I made this shot with a focus stacking between the elements around the puddle and the castle with its bridge, I then joined a further shot to correct the perspective of the bridge and the castle

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take single shots for this focus stacking, I opened the image with camera raw and i opened in Photohope where i blended the images using auto blend layers functions, than i correct the perspective using the other image of the Castel Sant’Angelo

With the complete image obtained i started edting using TTS Pro to enhance details, colours and contrast. I added a dark orton effect to create a powerful light and at the same time darken the scene

I added a smart warm filter to increase the yellow lights in the scene and I corrected the lights in the sky to enhance the clouds.

As final step i brushed the puddle wih a yellow brush to give it more light energy

The Sky in the Lake

Tags :

During my last trip in Carinthia I visited many of the famous lakes that distinguish this area in Austria. Mostly these are large swimming lakes, with very interesting views of the mountains, but what you see in the picture was what fascinated me most

I’m talking about the famous Faaker lake, on my arrival I was impressed by the incredible silence that was heard in the clearing, only the noise that I heard was the ducks bathing in the distance, I walked on the shore for a few time until I found this point of view with these moorings for boats

I started taking some test shots until over time the sky brought out the beautiful colors of the golden hour, coloring not only the clouds behind the mountains but the whole body of water of the lake where the sky was perfectly reflected

I tried both compositions both vertical and horizontal but the vertical one was the one that gave greater depth to the photo and greater movement also thanks to the leaf that was at the bottom

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended my exposures using digital blending, after this I edited colors to give more emphasis to yellows and golden hour colours. I increased details and contrast in order to let the image result less flat

I added orton effect to create a dreamy look and make the image more pop, after some adjustments using luminosity masks on the exposure and highlights I used dodge an burn on the poles and on the leaf in order to give more result and make them less dark

I added a soft vignette to darked the lower part of the picture and give more sense of depth on the whole picture

I always hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Halfway to the Coast

The beautiful colors of the Cilento cliffs are one of my favorite spots in this area. This year I have been several times here and every time I managed to capture great sunsets and as many beautiful colors. The mountains are not far from the sea here and this creates a beautiful atmosphere at sunset

When I took this photo in the evening the sea was very rough, I put my tripod on a rock sheltered from the high water and started shooting with the colors of the golden hour until almost complete darkness

Capturing the entire event allowed me to take the whole dynamic range of the scene. In particular the brightly colored sky is the result of the yellow colors of the sunset when it was to turn towards the blue, having more series of shots at my disposal it allowed me to protect the yellows by exploiting the beautiful purple colors of “evening”

At the same time the long exposure of the water was captured in another series of shots that I used on the main frame to edit

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For this shot I makes 2 different blends: one for a series captured during the golde hour and another with another exposure series captured during the blue hour, so with more darkness.

I selected the shot with the golden hour and I used the blue hour blend to make some adjustments in the main frame, so I used it to blend, water and some part of the sky that i want to replace with a more dark image

I added details and I increased yellow colours in the sky using a warm filter applied to luminosity masks. I used dodge and burn on the rocks to make some lights effect in the direction of the sun, I always used dodge and burn to soften som lights coming from the clouds. I added orton effect and I increased the contrast using TTS Pro that have this function applied to luminosity masks in order to create a series of curves easy to adjust

I fixed the finale exposure and I increased the shadows to mitigate the darkess coming from the foreground rocks

As final step I made some colours increase adjustments, pushing up the vibrance but reducing the blues becoming too strong

I hope you will find this usefull. I like to ear this from you!

Pool With a View

Tags :

This magical place is near the regional park of Alps in Belluno, skirting the lake of Mis you arrive in this series of natural pools feed by a waterfall with the alps in the background

The crystalline water and the white rock at certain times of the day it reaches its most complete amazing yellow colours when sun goes behind the mountains and all take a great looking yellow like golden hour

To take this photo I decided to create a vertical photomerge of two shots so as to include as much as possible of the scenery

The waterfall that feeds the pools is on the back, so I could not include it in the same shot but I promise you that it will be the subject of my next posts 😀

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured two series of shots to photomerge, for each series I take 3 bracketed shots that I blended using auto blend darks function of TTS PRO

After a lights fix using curves applied to luminosity masks, I increased details and controlled contrast. With a warm filter, I generate more yellows tones and I decreased the luminosity of the mountain with dodge and burn

I applied a soft orton effect details using my panel, a orton effect that create the typical effect but avoiding to loose sharpness. I create a light painting in the picture using the brush on the main viewer’s eye points

I decrease the luminosity a bit and I generate a soft vignette as final steps

I hope you will find this informations usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

I like Santander, both within the same town and just outside, offering lots of photographic spots and beautiful places to see. This is the case of the Magdalena Peninsula, a city park located on this small natural place

The place occupies a well-kept park with an area dedicated to see local sea fauna, museums and panoramic views. I found this little beach right in this peninsula where I shot some photos. For this shot  to avoid direct sunshine I took 7 bracketing shots with an nd64 filter

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started blending the images, I discarted the too overexposed and underexposed shots to obtain a base shot. I created luminosity masks contrasts and I added some warm look using a filter

With TTS Fast Panel I increased details, sharpen and I use it for launch dodge and burn with I fixed some lights and shadows around the rocks, I also used a little orton effect and I added some more contrast and a light vignette to give more dark look at the image

The Golden Bay

This is a beach located on the north of Malta, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is a sandy beach with a blue sea but has two cliffs on its sides

It is on one of these cliffs that I went to take this photo, I made several shots since the sun was high when it dropped under the cliff, I caught all the moments using my nd filter, the idea was to merge the multiple exposures between solar reflections and sea

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I divided the exposures between the series sun on top and sun behind the cliff, I merged the two series separately using luminosity masks. Then I blended this two layers using a gradient between sky and sea

I made some lights adjustments using curves applied to luminosity masks, then I launched high details and sharpen using my panel. The step later was to correct some color cast and increasing yellows

Using dodge and burn I fix some luminosity around the rocks and the sea, after some other light and contrast correction I increased color vividness using LAB Color

As usual I hope you will find this usefull. Your feedback is my pleasure!

Forum Magnum

For my opinion this is one of the top spots in Rome to take photos, the location is easy to find and what you see from here is the typical view of Roman Imperial Forum

I did this photo at the first sunset lights with 5 bracketed shots, the light coming from the bottom of the forum was very high and dimmed the foreground. For this kind of takes I also use a high d-lighting on my camera,  why it provides a valid in-shot contribution and allows to have a clearer picture on the shadow areas

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended all selected exposures with luminosity masks, starting from the darken to the brightest image. I added contrast using darks2 curves and details plus sharpening in the whole frame. I used dodge and burn to lighten some darker part of the foreground and lighten some other too brights long the sunrays

After some correction of color cast, I increased sunset colors using a warm filter. I remove some noise visible on the foreground, and fixed light and darks as the final touch using luminosity mask  applied to curves

The Path of Glory

St. Angelo bridge shot taken from the banks of the Tevere river, this is a picture I took several times and is one spot that I like very much, in fact, this area is easy to find, a good point without the thousands of tourists who are in any other spot of Rome. This time I chose a time of golden hour on enough enlightened, I also benefited from good reflexes on the river and a shoal inside, rarely seen in the winter months. I would lower this to keep me with the shot but there were too many weeds at the base of the river, in fact some of them you can see the bottom 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots togheder, discarding the most overexposed exposure. With luminosity masks, I make some adjustments to the frame adding more contrast with darks and midtones masks. Using Fast Panel I increased details, applied orton effect decreasing opacity around 8% and applying dodge and burn to lighten some parts of the bridge and darken the castle. With hue/saturation I adjust the yellows and make some color adjustments.

I also used camera raw to increase selectively clarity around bridge, reflection and shoal. As final I applied a small vignette selectively removing darks in the highlights as to increase darkness and contrasts only in the foreground, because otherwise, the sky would take a dark blue variant that would be surreal. I hope you find this information useful, are always welcome your opinions on how you’d worked this photo
