Autumn offers many photographic opportunities for the beauty of his colours and moody shots and is therefore one of the favorite seasons of landscape photographers. Capturing the colours and the atmosphere of autumn is not so obvious, so in this guide we will see how to photography the beauty of the autumn colours following this 8 tips:

1. Prefer the Golden Hour

This applies as a general rule not only in autumn photography, golden hour helps to get much more vibrant and pop colors that best suit to get that perfect glow effect for fall colours

Since many autumn photos are taken in wooded environments, photographing during the golden hour in an area with very dense and closed trees can be counterproductive so in this case prefer times with the highest sun position

2. Use the Right White Balance

Usually automatic white balance is one of the most used one, automatic mode is comfortable and often reliable but this tends to flatten and neutralize the colours of the photos. To emphatize the autumn colours it would be preferable to choose a white balance using Shade mode. The light in shade is normally a little cooler than in the daylight, so this mode will add some warmth to your image

A pro tip is to use the Kelvin mode in your autumn shot, so you can adjust the temperature as your taste using live view in order to obtain more customizable results

3. Take Advantage of Fog and Clouds

Fog is that high-impact element that will incredibly help you create more atmosphere in your autumn landscapes, this because fog softens the contrasts of the scene and gives a nice depth of field. Cloudy sky likewise comes to our aid, rain and overcast skies are all conditions that help to focus on the colours of the autumn composition

4. Use Polarizer Filters

In autumn photography the polarizing filters are of great help to enhance the colours and contrast, this will give you a base image more easy to start editing. Other benefits of using polarizer filters are: reduce the glare, make sky more clear, allows to using lower shutter speed in case you shot for water

5. Use the Right Lens

In landscape photography the wide angle lens is often used, but knowing how to vary the lenses according to the condition allows you to capture the best image in the right moment

In autumn photography the attention to detail is the key, that’s why I take many photos with my 70-200 telephoto. Using a telephoto will help you to focus on a single spot and better enhance the scene details

6. Natural Frame your Shots

Framing is a very effective photography composition rules, taking advantages of the colours of the foliages, the trees, rivers and rocks can be a great help to better composite your shot and emphatize the viewer’s eye on the main subject.

7. Look for Water

Adding water in your autumn shots will add a strong element to enhance your image, imagine a lake that reflects all the beautiful autumn colors in your scene, or a waterfall that with its flow guides the viewer’s eye towards other elements of the photo

Water is in general a very strong element in landscape photography and especially in autumn photography. To get the most out of the water combine it with the golden hour for a very powerful impact effect

8. Bonus Tip

A New Day

Finally I have again the opportunity to freely go out to photograph and on the first day I decided to go to the most famous spot of my city. It was great to take advantage of the total absence of tourists and people in the area but despite everything to avoid any possible presence of people, I went there for the sunrise

The splendid sunrays of sun that at this time of year are behind the Coliseum were unfortunately covered by clouds but anyway with all the sunrise colours on the sky

Talking about composition I preferred a vertical shot with composition, they are among my favorites, to emphasize the coliseum in the background and a leading compositional line towards the monument


WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I made the image with the focus stacking technique by shooting the bracketed image for each series of captured images. If you want to know more about this technique that I always use when taking photos like this, I recommend reading this guide

With the resulting expoures I digital blended the images using TTS Pro. With the help of luminosity masks I fixed highlights, shadows and contrasts. After adding details selectively I increased the color vibrance exalting magentas and blue colours

I added orton effect and with the use of dodge and burn I lightened the blacks around the Coliseum. With the glow tool I lightened some highlights in the sky and created soft light bleeding near the sun position. As final step I added a vignette to darken the foreground and to give more prominence to the central scene

The Autumn Leaves

This week I take a break from the tutorials to return to publish some new photos and today I propose an old photo taken in Japan in 2018. I had discarded this photo at the time because I did not like that framing of leaves so blurred for which I didn’t have to chance to capture the shot using focus stacking for logistical problems…

In fact, to capture this temple with this view I had to climb through a very high bush for which not even the easel could reach, I took it freehand and on tiptoe. All this set of non-technical details, made me think that something wrong in this shot but that I reevaluated it today, also looking at the many images that run on web with very prominent framing like this

The blurring of the leaves on the left gives an idea of ​​the context in which this splendid temple is located in Kyoto, a beautiful garden that I could safely admire and turn at the opening of the temple gates to avoid finding tourists in the area


WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take this shot as single exposure so no digital blend was done for this, I started fixing highlights, shadows and contrast using luminosity masks.

I removed some chromatic aberrations around the corner of the leaves and I fixed colors first removing any color cast than increasing the purple tones and increasing vibrance

I added some more details selectively, than I added a soft orton effect. As final step I added a small vignette increasing the light in the center to make the image more pop

I took this photo in a beach located in the Gulf of Cilento, I love this area of Italy and very often I spend a few days here in the summer. The Cilento area is located in the southern part of Campania and is a UNESCO heritage area that offers not only beautiful beaches but also small mountains, archaeologic areas and natural parks

Although we are along the coast, the proximity of the hills to the sea, makes that in the evening, the sky around the mountains, is often clouded; creating interesting photographic spots not so common on the coasts

I make this shot in the final hours of sunset, to capture the movement of the water I used a 3-stop ND filter to avoid exposures that were too long for each series of shots


WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 5 exposure bracketing for this that I blended using my panel TTS PRO, to the blended image I added contrast and details

I fixed lights over the rocks and over the horizon using luminosity masks, than I enhanced colours using a cold filter applied to highlights and a bit less to the shadows

I boosted the colours of the sunset creating a mask for yellow, red and magenta to give more warm to the sky after this I applied a soft orton effect and a soft dodge and burn to the rocks and to the water

As final step I created a soft vignette to give more energy to the central scene

Here we are in the new year with views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This picture is part of the images that I made last October during my trip on the place. I took this picture in the late afternoon after a long time under the Tre Cime waiting the best light. I realize this final image after different series of exposures including one where I put a finger in front of the lens to remove the lens flare that reverberated in the image 🙂

I was with a D90 rent by a friend and I made five bracketed exposures using before a bkt series (-1, 0, +1) and then a (-2, 0, +2) because the menu of  D90 will not take us longer than three bracketed exposures. However I was in the past a possessor of Nikon D90 and I not remember about it, D90 has proven a great camera, it has done a great job 🙂

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started as usual with the digital blending of the images using the luminosity masks, starting from the over exposed  that I gradually darkened on the foreground and the sky, I repeated the same thing for the other series of exposures made by placing the finger in front the sun to avoid lens flare. So I created two final images taken with a digital blending, one with the sun and one with my finger placed in front of it. I used this last to remove all reflections from the main picture having an image from the sunlight clean without reflections

I flatten all levels and started editing the picture mainly using camera raw, I lowered  the exposure, highlights and lights. With my panel I launched the luminosity masks and applied contrast using midtones 3 applied to curves and soft light. I launched the dodge and burn with whom I dodge some points of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo as areas illuminated by the sun in the foreground.

I launched the effects high details and sharpen to increase detail and sharpness. As a finishing touch I still got up the contrasts using the levels adjustment layer and created a small vignetting to enhance the viewer’s vision depth. Cross of the Alps

I took this picture on the way back from Locatelli Refuge,  the sun was setting and the colors began to be warmer. I found this little chapel with the sunset behind and mountains to the side, a truly beautiful scene to photograph.The chapel  is the Cappella degli Alpini and is easily findable on google map complete with street view 🙂  The photo is the result of a digital blending of 3 bracketed shots that will show as usual as I worked below

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started with the three shots working them with uminosity masks, starting from the image clearer and gradually darkening the sky. I used the dodge and burn tool to lighten some part of the foreground and the mountain and I made some color correction to adjust sunset colours

After give more details and sharpen to the frame using TTS Fast Panel, I added some contrast using curves applied to midtone masks. With hue/saturation I lovered some blues on the top of the sky and as the last touch I added some little more contrast manually. For save the image for web I used this guide

The Path of Glory

St. Angelo bridge shot taken from the banks of the Tevere river, this is a picture I took several times and is one spot that I like very much, in fact, this area is easy to find, a good point without the thousands of tourists who are in any other spot of Rome. This time I chose a time of golden hour on enough enlightened, I also benefited from good reflexes on the river and a shoal inside, rarely seen in the winter months. I would lower this to keep me with the shot but there were too many weeds at the base of the river, in fact some of them you can see the bottom 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots togheder, discarding the most overexposed exposure. With luminosity masks, I make some adjustments to the frame adding more contrast with darks and midtones masks. Using Fast Panel I increased details, applied orton effect decreasing opacity around 8% and applying dodge and burn to lighten some parts of the bridge and darken the castle. With hue/saturation I adjust the yellows and make some color adjustments.

I also used camera raw to increase selectively clarity around bridge, reflection and shoal. As final I applied a small vignette selectively removing darks in the highlights as to increase darkness and contrasts only in the foreground, because otherwise, the sky would take a dark blue variant that would be surreal. I hope you find this information useful, are always welcome your opinions on how you’d worked this photo
