I have been to this location several times in the past, there is a post from 2017 that you can find at this link

The suggestive truglia tower is a bastion of roman origin used mostly used for military sightings. Destroyed several times over the years it has been rebuilt and today it is a pleasant panoramic point of the city of Sperlonga

Before being able to take this photo I waited a few days for an interesting sky and passed in search of a different composition from the ones I had already done in the past

I decided to compose the photo in this way in order to have in the same composition a good foreground element but at the same time of the leading lines that lead towards the main subject of the tower

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured 3 bracketed shot for this image that I digital blended using TTS Pro using the auto blend function. I increased details and the warm tones of the sun applying a warm filter to luminosity masks

I used the glow tool to lighten some part of the image and to create a glow effect, after increasing a bit the contrast I increased the color vibrance of the entire image decreasing the effect on the cactus

Lastly I applied the skylight filter of color efex pro limitedly to the sky to incrase the sunset color and as final step a soft vignette to better expose the central tower

As always I hope you will find this usefull! I love to ear that from you!

A Night at the Castle

Tags :

A night shot taken in one of my favourite places for night shots, I’ve captured several milky way shots here and you can more informations about this place in this post and here.

This photo is the result of that night at the castle where before making this startrail I was intent on taking the milky way in the surrounding area. That night was not a “new moon night”, so I had time to shoot only before the moon rising before ending this night session. So after capturing the milky way in the spots that I had set for myself in the remaining time I made this startrail

The lights you see on some parts of the location where I was is the moon starting to rise illuminating the rocks that were in front of me, luckily creating a beautiful lighting and atmosphere to the surroundings in some of my shots that I used for blending

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I captured the startrail from several expoures that I blended using Starstax Software, than I opened the image into Photoshop and I started editing lights and shadows using  luminosity masks, with the help of  TTS Pro I reduced noise in the sky and in some other darker parts of the image

I increased the glow effect adding orton effect and I lightened some darker parts of the rocks using dodge and burn with a white brus. I fixed some colors in the sky giving more blue to it and increasing some purple/yellow tones near the horizon

I inceased the color vibrances to give a more pop look to the picture and as final step I softly increased the whole illumination to give more results to the foreground

As always I hope you will find this usefull! I love to ear this from you!

Stars Zoom

Hello guys! Here I am again with a night picture from the beautiful Rocca Calascio. What you see is the castle, with the path that leads to the slopes of the fortress. The way was glimpsed in the darkness and the atmosphere created by this photo was something that catch me imediately I like very much that mood and I also like the light pollution behind the castle that seems a daylight lighting

Speaking of the sky and the stars this time I tried to do something different, I enjoyed playing with the zooming and  Photoshop levels to create something original and slightly different from the usual, one created is a startrail zoom made by copying the same level multiple times and changing the blending mode into lighten, the sky full of point-like stars seemed to me too reductive for this beautiful castle 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

After created the images stack I changed the blending mode into lighten to create a zooming effect, than i merged the result into a final frame. Using TTS PRO I launched luminosity masks with I increased the lights of the darks and decreased the highlights curves. I created contrast zones to fix the light and the contrast over the main part of the picture

The next step was to fix colors using auto correct, that give me a very good color tone, than I slighlty changed it by reducing blues and increasing yellow using a warming filter.

I used dodge and burn to lighten the path that lead to the castle, I also launched orton effect decreasing the opacity to 8% to create a soft and dark dreamy atmosphere in the image. The last step was to darken the image e and to launch a noise reduction with very low opacity just to give the last touch

All the effects I mentioned above are inside my brand new panel TTS PRO, that I recommend to download to  fasten your workflow and to have all the effect in one click application!

I  hope you will find this usefull. I love to hear that from you!

Another shot from the wonderful location of Rocca Calascio, a fantastic place where I will definitely come back to do again other milky way shots  because I was pleasantly impressed

In this photo I did something different, since the milky way was to the left of the ruin in the center of the frame I did many shots in this direction but I could not totally miss the opportunity to photograph the castle with the milky way, the castle of Rocca Calascio is the main protagonist of this location. For this reason I took several shots to compose a panorama, from the left to the right vertical

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I Photomerged the shots to have a final frame, for first I edited the colors in the milky way to give more saturation and vividness. The following step was to dodge and burn the foreground and the milky way to push out details in the white part of it, with hue/saturation I edits the luminosity of the colors in the sky

Other edits are: increase sharpness, increase contrast and adding a glow effect using orton effect. I fixed hue/saturation around the rocks and on the milky way, to reduce saturated yellow and increase magentas. At the end I increased a little bit contrast using levels and decreased noise.

Midnight Memories

Rocca calascio is an excellent solution for photographing stars and milky way, the ruins were illuminated by the lights coming from the castle that until 1 AM were still on, nevertheless the visibility of the milky way was still great!

I have been here collecting so many shots of a beautiful starry sky, beginning today with this first photo promising to post the others on the return of my next trip to Northern Spain. This is actually my last post before my trip, when I  will come back with so many new content. Stay connected!

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single shot, I edited it before in camera raw decreasing exposures and increasing contrast, shadows and blacks

One opened in Photoshop I made some adjustments to lights and shadows using luminosity masks, than I made a big work of dodge and burn with I fixed lights around the milky way

With hue/saturation I fixed colors around the stars and I decreased the yellows around the ruins. I applied sharpen and orton effect with TTS Fast Panel. As final touch I reduced noise and I applied a small vignette to the frame

The Path of Glory

St. Angelo bridge shot taken from the banks of the Tevere river, this is a picture I took several times and is one spot that I like very much, in fact, this area is easy to find, a good point without the thousands of tourists who are in any other spot of Rome. This time I chose a time of golden hour on enough enlightened, I also benefited from good reflexes on the river and a shoal inside, rarely seen in the winter months. I would lower this to keep me with the shot but there were too many weeds at the base of the river, in fact some of them you can see the bottom 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the shots togheder, discarding the most overexposed exposure. With luminosity masks, I make some adjustments to the frame adding more contrast with darks and midtones masks. Using Fast Panel I increased details, applied orton effect decreasing opacity around 8% and applying dodge and burn to lighten some parts of the bridge and darken the castle. With hue/saturation I adjust the yellows and make some color adjustments.

I also used camera raw to increase selectively clarity around bridge, reflection and shoal. As final I applied a small vignette selectively removing darks in the highlights as to increase darkness and contrasts only in the foreground, because otherwise, the sky would take a dark blue variant that would be surreal. I hope you find this information useful, are always welcome your opinions on how you’d worked this photo

The Rock

During my stay in Ischia I could not visit the characteristic Castello Aragonese. , Is a rising fort on a small island of volcanic origin slightly detached from Ischia and connected  through the bridge you see on the right. The whole island of Castello Aragonese can be visited and is also very interesting, if you want to get to the top, there’s also a lift that allows you to save you skip 60 meters high.

I went to the castle a few minutes before sunset , I did not have much of a hurry because my intention was to photograph it during the blue hour… so it was, I came across this little corner of the beach that run along the bridge leading to the castle, I take on the place some shots between the different moments of the sunset.

I started working with luminosity masks to blend the exposures, sky was manually blended from another series of exposures I take before. After the blend of the images with luminance masks I started increasing colors (more yellows) to create a cool mix between golden hour and blue hour. I put a little Orton Effect to the image to create a gleam effect to the lights behind Castello Aragonese, some detail increase and contrast adjustments using my action pack and that’s it.

Malcesine: Although this frame is not the point at the top to take pictures of the village, the cliff is on the right is very suggestive and cozy, also the beautiful glow that could be seen at the bottom of the mountains created a strange and particular magic in the picture. I took this picture from a balcony that was precisely on the road that leads up to the castle, are only 3 exposures taken by placing the camera on the railing of this balcony.

Picture from the slums of the Tevere at  Sant’Angelo bridge, with its castle. The bridge of Sant’Angelo does not need any introduction, every time I shoot in my city is one of my favorite photo destinations. 😀  The final result is a series of bracketing expoures obtained from seven long ones, I wanted to capture as much as possible from the sky that threatened rain and I did 🙂

Exposures were processed with Photoshop CC through the layer stacking (not all used) and the use of luminance masks, starting from the image darker and going slowly to lighten the rest of the photos with other exposures.

Lake Path

Lake Bled taken from the jetty in the east side. I say it now, I replaced the original jetty in the image with this one you can see, the original one was not attractive at all, it was too short and flat. The rest of the landscape was pretty but it needed depth that I was able to give the picture thanks to the replacement of the dock. As you can see from the before after I have attached below other major edits were performed on colors and to the water. I made this HDR from three shots, I replaced the dock and worked with hue/saturation to bring him a shade similar to that of the rest of the image. For the rest I uniform all through the masks luminance and contrast.

Lens: Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 (Shot at 14mm)
