Illusion of Time – Tre Cime

Illusion of Time – Tre Cime

I come back after several years to Tre Cime of Lavaredo, an incredible and beautiful place known wordwide. Unlike last time I took the typical shot of the view of the Tre Cime closer to the blue hour

At that time some clouds were also rising that, few minutes later, covered the whole view in white, luckily I was able to capture the last images of the day of the visible peaks before they were covered

I take the shot using the focus stacking technique, focusing first on the small flowers in the foreground, then in the central part and then on the peaks. I taked some shots based on the alternation of the clouds on Tre Cime waiting to capture the shot that would make them visible at best, the result of 9 total photos is what you see in the image

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

As mentioned I made this shot using focus stacking technique, I made it blending all the shots avaiable captured here, 9 shots with different focus parts included the image used for the peaks. I don’t use digital blending here because I don’t captured bracketed shots, the management of so many shots with different focus and also with different exposure would have created an incredible and not so usefull job to do in post

Therefore I edited the image using only luminosity masks and my panel TTS Pro, as usual we see the main steps of the workflow:

I added details and contrast to the whole frame, I fixed colours, than glow using orton effect . With the help of dodge and burn tool I lightened some darker part of the foreground and on the clouds

I increased the blue tones of the image adding a cold filter applied to highlights than shadows, I also used light bleeding to add some lights to the sky and colours to the clouds

I desaturate selectively some blue tones of the sky and as final step I added a soft dark vignette to the frame

Orvieto is a very pretty town in central Italy, with an excellent historical and artistic heritage. Its splendid cathedral is the most visited spot in the city very similar to the most famous cathedral of Siena

This wonderful cathedral is not the only spot you can visit here, you will find also the the St. Patrick water well, another great spot in Orvieto. i visited both during my day here so i don’t rule out future photos at the water well too 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

To make this shot I used the vertorama technique using a series of horizontal shots. Usually I don’t apply this technique so much and I prefer direcly shooting vertically but on this occasion it was necessary to include the whole cathedral in the scene.

I selected all the images an created the output images, I managed lights and shadows using luminosity masks than I added contrast and details using TTS Pro. I removed all the ghost in the frame and I clean the scene from unwanted elements

I decreased the luminosity of the scene using color lookup filters applied selectively on the shadows and highlights, than I also launched a soft orton effect to create this glimpse glow effect

Using dodge and burn I lightened some part of the scene including cathedral, as final step I created a soft vignette to darken the foreground area

Capri

This is a picture from 2019, I take this shot in the beautiful island of Capri this is the view o classical Faraglioni from the stairs leading to the beach in front of them

During the walk through the beach the dense vegetation does not always make it possible to see the two Faraglioni rocks in the sea but I found this opening by chance which also created an interesting compositional framing

I post this photo after a year because even this like the previous post I initially discarted it, in fact in this photo the largest rock of the two Faraglioni is covered by vegetation but it is in any case a very interesting composition

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I digital blended the shots using TTS Pro, I fixed highlights and shadow using luminosity masks. I added a warm filter to the sky using luminosity masks and color efex pro filter, than I added orton effect to create a soft dreamy effect

To lighten the dark of the foliage I used dodge and burn to lighten the shadows and light bleeding to increase the warm of the sky

After adding details on the whole image, I removed the effect on the sea and as final step, increased the contrast on the rocks

I really hope you will find this usefull! Love to ear this from you!

Mirror Hole

Tags :

During my visit to Lake Braies, I took a short ride along the lakeside looking for some interesting spots until I found this hole in the ice on the left side of the path

What struck me most about this spot was not so much finding an interesting composition, but to see how the trees and the mountain reflected in the hole in front of me. On the right side, the mountain reflects itself on the thin layer of existing ice

I took a series of 7 exposures brackting since the area where I was shooting was quite dark I wanted to have the full dynamic range available to intervene later with the digital blending

I take my shots a distance using my 14-24 lens set to 20 to not get too close to the hole where all around the ice was very thin, it was a little risky 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I opened all my shots inside Photoshop and I blended the exposures using TTS PRO with the use of luminosity masks I set the highlights and shadows to fix the sky and lighten the trees that was too dark

I increased details in the whole frame mitigating the effect by inserting a slight orton effect, which as you know I love to insert in almost all my images at low opacity

With dodge and burn I increased the lights over the ice and the reflections around the hole, giving more energy to the reflections and to that glow of light that is near the ice

I increased the purple colors a bit using camera raw filters and I put less blues using hue/saturation hand tool

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m happy to ear this from you!

King of Snow

Also this year I decide to spend a some days on the Italian Alps, these places are always beautiful and I really appreciate them also in winter, here we have Lake Carezza or rather the Latemar massif considering that the lake below is completely submerged in the snow

After the recent heavy rains in the autumn that caused extensive damage in many regions of northern Italy, this area has suffered too, on the road that leads to the lake I found hundreds of trees felled and collapsed due to bad weather and even the long lake Carezza not it was accessible

Despite this condition from the road it was possible the same to admire the lake Carezza and the Latemar massif due to the absence of trees that usually cover the view from the street. To have a greater width and depth of the scene I decided to photograph the lake through a photomerge, so I photographed the lake according to 3 sections, taking care not to exclude any element between one photo and the other, with bracketing mode to 3 shots

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I’m not a great fan of Photomerge because it increases the work in Photoshop, but I must admit that it is of great help when you want to give a greater photographic composition, to do this work I captured three bracketing images per horizontal group, respectively the mountain, the central body of the photo and the foreground

I discarded the darker ones and I worked exclusively on the middle shot and the brightest shot of the bracketing series, so I created two photomerges which I then used for digital blending. With the full image avaiable I started working on it to intensify the colors, here I used the Color efex pro plugin to boost up of the golden hour tones

Then I increased the contrast and details with the help of my TTS PRO panel. I used the dodge and burn applied to the luminosity masks darks to lighten the trees under the latemar massif and to darken and then bring out the details of the mountain, with the colors I intensified the yellow levels and slightly lowered the blue ones

I intensified the highlights and applied a slight orton effect to increase the photo’s glow level, as a final step I again adjusted the contrast of the photo and the brightness through the layers adjustment layers

Kyoto Dusk

Tags :

Since I woke up almost always before dawn during my trip to Japan, I took the opportunity to take some shots even in the streets bordering the main points of interest of Kyoto. This street that in the evening is full of life and locals, in the early morning is a very quiet street and in my opinion enjoys one of the most beautiful views of Kyoto

I stayed here doing some shots waiting for the opening of the Kiyomizu-dera temple that is nearby, I made several shots in the hope that someone would pass in typical clothes in the early morning, but I was not so lucky 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended my exposures into one image, first thing was to fix the lights on th lamps using luminosity masks.  After this I increased details and I applied dodge and burn over the darker areas of the image

I increased the blue tones of the image using my panel with the use of the cold highlights and cold shadows filters that apply selectively a cold filter to highlights and shadows. After a soft dark orton effect, after a slightly increased the shadows and I added more glow to the lamps over the lights

The last passage was to increase the dark mood with a small vignette.

I hope you will find this usefull. I’m always happy to ear this from you!

A Night in the Village

Takayama is located in the Gifu prefecture and it is a small village located between the Japanese Alps. Visiting Takayama means visiting a very traditional part of Japan and enjoying its magical atmosphere. The whole village can be covered on foot in a short time and those that you do here are pleasant walks through restaurants and artisan shops

The Sanmachi sūji district is one of more visited, here is possible to visit not only shops of various kinds, houses, but also small museums and companies among the best and oldest producers of sake even some producers for centuries, in an atmosphere where time seems to have stopped

The trip to Takayama is long and with some transhipment but the place did not disappoint. Personally I found here a magical atmosphere of Japan experience and delicious food! 🙂

The photo spot is the main torii in Takayama symbol of access to the old city located at the end of the bridge, below the river Miyagawa. At dusk this spot has acquired a magical atmosphere, with the river flowing I took the opportunity to take a picture that took as much as possible of this corner of Japan

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take some bracketing shots that I blended in Photoshop using TTS PRO, with the resulting image I first arranged some perspective lines and made some spot interventions with the clone stamp. Done this I increased details and used a blue filter to increase the degree of dark atmosphere of this image

Using dodge and burn I lightened the reflections in the water and made other small interventions along the bridge. I intervened with the luminosity masks to increase the level of blacks, to create greater contrast to the image and to change the color level with little intervention on the hue/saturation adjustment layer. With the glow tool I increased the brightness of some areas then inserting a vignette at the end to darken the edges

As always I hope you will find this usefull. Love to hear this from you!

Every time I go to Milan I always take photos in the new area of Porta Nuova it’s a brand new quarter, full of skyscrapers and modern facilities, this area is one of my favorite photographic locations in Milan

Among the various spots that I have had the opportunity to photograph there is also this that you see in the picture, an installation with many trumpets that leads the parking with the upper side, by speaking in one of this trumpets the voice and the sound propagate along the whole length and it is possible to communicate between one floor and the other

This is a shot that I have done at other times but this time I decided to photograph directly from the parking lot to resume the entire length of the installation and take advantage of all the lights

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take exposures for this, I blended the shots using TTS PRO to decrease the parking lights. I increased details and using dodge and burn I fixed the lights too much overexposed

I added a small glow effect in the picture using a very soft orton effect and I increased blue luminosity to make better visible the sky. My latest touch was to add a small vignette to intensify the central part of the frame

You can find all this effect in my brand new panel TTS PRO, one click to lauch all this effect and to create beautiful images

I hope you will find this informations usefull. I Love to ear this from you!

Always from the famous Piazza San Marco, looking at the Grand Canal I take this long exposure from he gondolas dock located in the square

Compared to the previous shot I changed point of view, this is as I mentioned above in the main dock of San Marco, I love the stark contrast of the movements of the boats opposed to the static of the dock

Also here I used a ND64 filter applied to 5 exposures brackets to this shot, to have a  dark sky from the underexposed frame and I very smooth water from the overexposed one

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I used the most bright image as top layer and applying luminosity masks to have a nice view of long exposure on the sea and on the gondolas,  I lowered the exposure of the sky and part of the water using the darker image

Once this done I applied a warm filter to increase the yellow effect of the sunset decreasing the opacity around 20%. After a use of dodge and burn under the dark areas of the docks I fixed darks and brights using luminosity masks applied to curves

With TTS Fast Panel I fixed details and contrasts, also applying a slight orton effect to the image. I darkened the image and raised the vibrance of the colors excluding the effect from the blue of the gondolas that became too intense

As always I hope you will find this info usefull. I’m always happy to ear it from you!

Morning Glow

Tags :

I captured this beach in the morning twilight, the photo is a long exposure of 20 seconds I did using a filter nd64 (6 stops). Cilento area has beautiful landscapes made up of mountains but also many beaches

When I take thi shot I was impressed and Ireally liked this beach, the view of the sea that was lost in the morning glow of the clouds on the horizon

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a sinlge exposure so I don’t blend images but I made a ETTR, so the final picture was a bit overexposed but I used luminosity masks to decrease lights in the highlights and in the foreground to reach the effect I want from this

I  used Dodge and burn  to made some adjustments on the rocks and on the water, using my panel, I increased details and sharpen and by using a blue filter I increased the blue and purpe colors in the picture to give more cold look. With orton effect I increased the glow effect in the frame trying to give a dreamy look at the picture

Last edits was to increase contrast to give a more dark look on the rocks, emphatizing lights using again dodge and burn, the latest touch was adding a small vignette to the borders

I really hope you will like this and you will find this information usefull. I’m happy to hear this from you 🙂
