I love photographing Rome from the bridges of the river. This is a shot that I cyclically go to take because it’s a beautiful spot and every time it changes in something

No doubt, this spot is one of the most classic in Rome and if you have seen my recent instagram / facebook stories you realized how many people had crowded it in a street corner just to take this picture

Unfortunately some locations in Rome are recently becoming impractical for the crowds around these photo spots and this is becoming one of them

However the view from here is magnificent, Castel Sant’Angelo on the right (remains covered by the trees but it is still visible between), at the bottom the San Pietro basilica and all the beauty reflections and water games that this postcard offers

The only disturbing element is unfortunately that horrendous billboard that has been there for a long time now, besides being huge it is also illuminated and impacts a lot in the picture. I could not remove it in post because I would have compromised the photo, but I had a strong temptation to do it


WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I wait until the complete dusk to make this shot, this is from the late blue hour. I captured 5 bracketed shots and I blended all the exposures using TTS PRO 

With the blended image I fixed the light and darkness using curves tool and luminosity masks, than I straightened the horizon using ruler tool on the bridge and I launched high details filters of my panel

I applied a cold filter to the image, first applying it on the highlights and then on the shadows, to give a greater nocturnal and a “elegance” touch to the frame

I fixed some colors that appears too bright, for this I used hue / saturation filter applied selectively thank I increased the vividness of the sky

In closing I applied a slight orton effect and increased the sharpen reducing the opacity to 20%

The Underbelly

One of the most significative spot of Rome is the view of Castel Sant’Angelo with his bridge, this is one of my favourite spots in my city

The beauty of the castle and the reflections on the river during dusk are make this place one of the most famous locations in Rome

I usually take my shots the other side of the bridge but this time cause to a dry river this time I preferred the view from the west side

That day I stayed in the place from the sunset to the end of the blue hour, just before dark the sky take a tone of a beautiful purple

Although I was satisfied with my previous shots taken, the latest photos with this shade of purple became my main choices ūüôā


WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take 5 exposure brackets for this frame, I blended the shots using
TTS PRO with the function auto blend darks, I started from the darker shots to the brighter

With the use of luminosity masks I ligthened some parts under the bridge, to decrease the darks than with dodge and burn I pushed up the lights in the areas of main view of the frame

I increased details and contrast, with a curve tool I also increased the luminosity of the sky and applied a soft warm filter to the higlights to mitigate the blue/purple effect and better mix it with golden hour colours

I added a vignette to increase the sense of darkness of this image and with the glow tool I increased the luminosity of reflections and water

Last passage is to use color efex pro filter to use “glamour glow” filter to add a smooth look to the image, I love the glow generated by this filter

King of Snow

Also this year I decide to spend a some days on the Italian Alps, these places are always beautiful and I really appreciate them also in winter, here we have Lake Carezza or rather the Latemar massif considering that the lake below is completely submerged in the snow

After the recent heavy rains in the autumn that caused extensive damage in many regions of northern Italy, this area has suffered too, on the road that leads to the lake I found hundreds of trees felled and collapsed due to bad weather and even the long lake Carezza not it was accessible

Despite this condition from the road it was possible the same to admire the lake Carezza and the Latemar massif due to the absence of trees that usually cover the view from the street. To have a greater width and depth of the scene I decided to photograph the lake through a photomerge, so I photographed the lake according to 3 sections, taking care not to exclude any element between one photo and the other, with bracketing mode to 3 shots

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I’m not a great fan of Photomerge because it increases the work in Photoshop, but I must admit that it is of great help when you want to give a greater photographic composition,¬†to do this work I captured three bracketing images per horizontal group, respectively the mountain, the central body of the photo and the foreground

I discarded the darker ones and I worked exclusively on the middle shot and the brightest shot of the bracketing series, so I created two photomerges which I then used for digital blending. With the full image avaiable I started working on it to intensify the colors, here I used the Color efex pro plugin to boost up of the golden hour tones

Then I increased the contrast and details with the help of my TTS PRO panel. I used the dodge and burn applied to the luminosity masks darks to lighten the trees under the latemar massif and to darken and then bring out the details of the mountain, with the colors I intensified the yellow levels and slightly lowered the blue ones

I intensified the highlights and applied a slight orton effect to increase the photo’s glow level,¬†as a final step I again adjusted the contrast of the photo and the brightness through the layers adjustment layers

Kyoto Dusk

Since I woke up almost always before dawn during my trip to Japan, I took the opportunity to take some shots even in the streets bordering the main points of interest of Kyoto. This street that in the evening is full of life and locals, in the early morning is a very quiet street and in my opinion enjoys one of the most beautiful views of Kyoto

I stayed here doing some shots waiting for the opening of the Kiyomizu-dera temple that is nearby, I made several shots in the hope that someone would pass in typical clothes in the early morning, but I was not so lucky ūüôā

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended my exposures into one image, first thing was to fix the lights on th lamps using luminosity masks.  After this I increased details and I applied dodge and burn over the darker areas of the image

I increased the blue tones of the image using my panel with the use of the cold highlights and cold shadows filters that apply selectively a cold filter to highlights and shadows. After a soft dark orton effect, after a slightly increased the shadows and I added more glow to the lamps over the lights

The last passage was to increase the dark mood with a small vignette.

A Night in the Village

Second image from Takayama village in Japan, I took this second picture a few minutes after that of my previous post going to photograph the bridge in his front view, the image so quiet in the village at sunset illuminated by these yellow lanterns was a very impressive element for me.

Even the contrast between the yellow lights and the blue twilight has greatly attracted my curiosity, I love the blue hour for these reasons. I captured this image with a very low light, so at ISO 100 the shutter speed was 30 seconds

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single shot, so this time no blending was done for this picture. Anyway I always used luminosity masks  to fix the lights in the sky, over the lanterns and set the right contrast. I set the proportions and slightly straightened the photo, with the clone stamp I removed a spot at the top

With the glow tool  I made some lights adjustments on the bridge to increase the light and give more warm over the area under the lanters. I gave a soft orton effect and I added a warm filter to the foreground to give more the impression of  lighting coming from the lanterns. I raised up the shadows with luminosity masks and as a last touch I created a small vignette to increase the sense of darkness

Vernazza Sunset

Second picture from the Vernazza, I made this photo by changing the frame during the blue hour. This picture is the result of two images blend, in particular I blended the sky shot that had visible colors in the sky with another bright exposures that had more movement on the water

In this case I did not use filters since the light was very low, I used the Pluto Trigger function that allows you to make long exposure bracketing shots going over 30′ seconds.¬†I really appreciated all the locations of the Cinque Terre but this one of Vernazza is certainly one of the best that can be found in this area, hope to have the chance to come here next time soon!

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the images using auto blend function of TTS PRO creating a new frame, I increased details and I fixed contrast always using my panel with luminosity masks contrast effect. I applied a warm filter on the highlights and I created a soft light bleeding to intensify the sunset colors and lighting

I made some adjustment using dodge and burn, especially in the darker parts of the town (where i pushed also up with curves and darks masks) the darker parts of the frame. After a highlights fix I created a small vignette. As final adjustments I increased the color vibrance, the yellow look of the image and  some lights adjustments on the plants in the foreground

Venice Moving III

The view from the Rialto bridge in Venice. Rialto Bridge is one of the most busiest and visited in the lagoon city, between gondolas and boats passing under it, even the bridge itself is always full of people practically at all hours of the day, but with a little patience a space to take pictures is always free ūüôā

Compared with the other photos called¬† “Venice Moving” I changed the type of movement moving from a movement of gondolas due to the wave motion to a movement of passage in the canal under Rialto

I took this picture with a series of long exposures and a nd 3 stop ND filter. Among the various results I particularly liked this with movements clearly visible unlike other light trails

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single exposure work, I make the first changes with the luminosity of the store lights, decreasing the effect. With a brush and using a new layer I replied the original color above the light trail of the boats to makethem more visible, then I changed the layer mode soft light to give a lighter effect

I fixed contrast using luminosity masks applied to lights, darks and midtones, using my panel I launched details and  dodge and burn to lighten the darker part of the image and softy lighten the buildings

I fixed the color cast and I add some warm/pink filter to give a different look at the image. As final step I applied a small vignette to the frame

Golden Blue

I like Santander, both within the same town and just outside, offering lots of photographic spots and beautiful places to see. This is the case of the Magdalena Peninsula, a city park located on this small natural place

The place occupies a well-kept park with an area dedicated to see local sea fauna, museums and panoramic views. I found this little beach right in this peninsula where I shot some photos. For this shot  to avoid direct sunshine I took 7 bracketing shots with an nd64 filter

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started blending the images, I discarted the too overexposed and underexposed shots to obtain a base shot. I created luminosity masks contrasts and I added some warm look using a filter

With TTS Fast Panel I increased details, sharpen and I use it for launch dodge and burn with I fixed some lights and shadows around the rocks, I also used a little orton effect and I added some more contrast and a light vignette to give more dark look at the image

Night from Day

Probably soon, I will return to this beautiful place, while I look at the old shots made the last time I went to Campo Imperatore to photograph the milky way I found this untreated photo

That afternoon I made some shots at the beautiful rocky lake and then moved to the point where the milky way was better visible at night, this is just one of the shots I did at the time of the first darks of night, at the time discarded but today revalued

The reflections of clouds and stars on the water of the lake create a magical atmosphere throughout the picture. At that time I probably had discarded it because the sky was too cloudy and the milky street was almost on the opposite side but having found a shot with this particular light was almost a surprise ūüôā

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I had only a shot, indeed two! The second is another picture with more foreground and less sky, I blended the two images to have a more complete frame with sky and foreground

I worked this picture only using luminosity masks applied to curves and other effect launched from my panel, high details, sharpen and dodge and burn as well. I also edited the colors warming the sky and pushing up some highlighs, I increased contrast and darkness to give a dark mood to the picture

As the final touch I reduce noise,¬†at some points in the photo there was visible. I hope you will find this usefull, I’m always happy to ear it from you!

The Twilight Set

Piazza Grande¬†in Montepulciano, is the main square that is in this city and is reached after a uphill way in the upper part of Montepulciano. This town is rich in art and history, and as well as seeing all the places shown in the twilight saga, you’ll come across plenty of interesting sights in this beautiful, cobblestoned town. Do not miss the Piazza Grande with its town hall and tower, seen in the exciting scene where Bella saves Edward

I used my ND filters to remove all the people who was in the square of Montepulciano, since they were a small center to say the truth were not so many people but it was a lot easier removing them using filters. I made several shots from the sunset lights to the evening, to keep the shots at various times of the day

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I selected some of the best shots taken and I blended them with luminosity masks. With the result, I choice some other earlier hour shot to remove the stronger light coming from the church simply using a layer mask. I made some color adjust reducing the violet strong color of blue hour and I aligned the square fixing proportions and angles

I launched high details and sharpen with my panel and I created some light in the foreground using dodge and burn. After increasing contrast and light using levels, I made the final touch with darken lighten center effect of color efex  pro filter
