During my stay in Aegina I went to the famous Temple of Aphaia, is the main attraction of this Greek island and I must admit that it is a wonderful spot. The Temple of Aphaia is located on a top a promontory overlooking the cliffs of Agia Marina, get there at sunset was not easy because of the Greek island public transport had a fairly limited hours and I found myself without a car. So I decided to climb by bus and then get off to Agia Marina on foot through a small mountain path. Whereas at that time there were no more public transport who got in around the archaeological site was almost desert. So I had this spot all to myself till the complete closing time of the place 🙂 As I said I did a lot of photos and this is the frontal view of the Temple of Aphaia. I made a bracketed series of about 5 shots but I’ve used less than half in my final image the more overexposed one used  to lighten the foreground that was so dark

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Starting from the correct exposure I focused to clear shadows of contrasts of the strong sun. I used Luminance Masks to blend the two layers. Always with the help of overexposed shot I cleared the sun’s rays to make a greater impact. I used the Lab Color with 60% opacity and then stepped up yellow using Hue/Saturation. Then I take a small Dodge and Burn on the rocks and on the temple itself and then I increased the details throughout the frame. Finally I slightly increased the contrast to give more prominence to the sky and added a small vignetting with Darken Lighten Center in Color Efex Pro at 35%

Lycabettus

The one on the far right is the Mount Lycabettus, a hill where you can admire a beautiful view of Athens as well as having a nice restaurant at its top. It is easily reached by a funicular from Kolonaki, another beautiful area of Athens. Mount Lycabettus is one of the Greek capital attractions, and there are also of course I was in, but just as I did to the Acropolis also in this case I decided to portray the mountain from the outside, overlooking the city. We’re at in the same area where I took Acropolis that you find in my previous post, I made the image from 3 exposures.

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started as usual using the luminance masks to combine different exposures together, I then stepped up hightlights for the sky and contrast for the city always using luminosity masks. With the help of Color Efex Pro I applied Skylight filter for intensifying the shade of yellow reducing the opacity around 60%. Then, it was the turn of  details pushed up selectively and of a soft dodge and burn effect using white and black brush with 2% opacity, by the trees (to create more light through the leaves) and darken areas of the rocks in the foreground. As a final touch, I created a small vignette to give greater prominence to the central part of the frame.

Sant’Angelo

I spent a wonderful weekend in Ischia in the early June of this year, this island is located in the south of Italy just close to the city of Naples. I did not go on this island for many years and it was nice to come back to relive those places, those people that sea. First photographic exit on the island of Ischia I went to Sant’Angelo district, one of the most beautiful island, here a ground strap meets a small island by creating a shortcut very particular. I took several photos throughout the area including this one which is taken from the road that leads to Sant’Angelo. Photo made from 5 exposures and combined with luminance masks, I did not madevery large interventions save as saturation to bring out the colors of the sunset.

Arsié Mirror

During my weekend in northern Italy, I often do some little excursion outside the city to go to take some photos in beautiful places offering the region of Veneto. The last time I decided to make this short trip to the Lake of Corlo (commonly called Lake Arsié). It is an artificial lake that is located near Belluno city. After a little tour scoutingI started taking photos near this small quay, where the stairs seemed to go down into the clouds so strong was the reflection of water.

I took this picture a few hours before sunset, because in my opinion the best light was right at that moment, in fact, though the high reflections of the clouds and the mountains to the side in the lake Arsié was absolutely spectacular. I took several photos in this location and went back on this quayside when the sunset started and I did not find the same light, because the sun will hide on the sides of the hills. Speaking about photoshop in this picture of Lake Arsié I try to maintain the natural look of the place, I have only exalted more contrasts and highlights, I also stepped details and given a dreamy effect using any of my actions for Orton Effect

The Ancient Way

Even on Dubrovnik walls, when it started the sunset on the way I came across this beautiful view with this bell and a fantastic sun flare, the walls of Dubrovnik offer endless possibilities for photographs along the perimeter of the city.

I made this image from 3 exposures, which combined with the Luminosity Masks and then edited using the Color Lookup technique, if you are interested you can read something about Color Lookup editing in my article on Camerapixo that explains how to do it.

For this image I put the Color Lookup filters as follows:

filmstock_50 set on 35%

fuji aeterna 250D set on 30%

kodak 5218 set on 15%

I also used the inevitable Nik Color Efex Pro to accentuate the yellow of the sunset and give more contrast to the final result

Sea outpost

What you see is the Norman tower of Maiori, once of the ancient outpost of the place, a  tower of excellence to scan the sea in an attempt to defend itself from invasion of the Saracens. Today the tower is a luxury restaurant with magnificent views of the Gulf of Campania and the Amalfi coast. I took this picture from the road and a free hand since the road was very narrow, and the stand I could not have a good view of the cliff, since you had to lean a little. In addition the car running faster on my left making everything much more difficult 🙂

However, it is a freehand picture made with 3 exposures, entirely worked with Luminance Masks, my actions and Photoshop Lab Coloring, for all of this you can find more in the tutorial section

Coastal Sunset II

If you liked my previous post, surely you appreciate this too, because this is the same location but taken from a closer position… and with less light course 🙂

After taking all the pictures on the cliff for the view from the top (I was precisely halfway between Amalfi and Atrani) I started to descend the cliff to direct me back to Amalfi to catch the last but to go home. A notice: My stay was in Maiori, a town not far from there, because Amalfi city is really very expensive

Anyway this is the view that welcomes the entrance of the city. I stopped on this place to take some shoots here, it was starting to get dark, the lights of the village were on and I did not want to miss a lighted shooting Amalfi in a late blue hour with citylights

Amalfi coast

This is the famous Amalfi coast, framed on the way to Amalfi, definitely my favorite shot in this part of south Italy. I took this picture after taking some shots at the port, as in my latest post. I started to go up on the Amalfi coast  by walk (which in the meantime was swarming with cars whizzing fast), to reach a first top where you could admire the beautiful Amalfi Coast in all its glory. I have been in this spot for about 20 minutes taking photos during different times of the Amalfi coast seascape during the golden hour.

When I go home I select the exposures taken in the first part of my take because they had a shade of yellow and the most characteristic colors than the other.  In Photoshop I used  my actions Luminosity Masks to do manual blend, my other actions to add, details, sharpen, orton effect and lab color.

A new picture from the city of arts and sciences valencia.  To how beautiful and funny it is this place I mentioned in my previous post. This photo was taken some minutes before the previous one in this stretch and the sunset reflected in the images of palaces and modern structures calatrava over small pond that surrounds the bulding of city of arts and sciences. Image taken with 3 exposures, I used the luminance masks to create a good image blending between the 3, I used my Photoshop actions  to increase detail, contrast and color and reduce noise

The Balance

A detail below the columns of the beautiful Plaza de España in Seville. I can say without exageration that this is one of the most beautiful squares I’ve ever seen in my life. Plaza de España is a square full of beautiful and semicircular building with symmetrical construction. Inside the square there is a semicircular waterway where you can rent boats to sightseeing the square by the river. During my visit in Plaza de España it was hit by a warm, bright sun that brought that day the temperature to 25 degrees in the middle of December 🙂
I realized 3 bracketed shots, I used all three shots to take with the luminance masks the desired brightness in the most contrasting areas of the colonnade. I deleted some tourists passing in the distance and I emphasized the effect of sunlight through the columns of the square.
