The beaches of northern Spain are among the most beautiful beaches in Europe, the particular shape of the coast, the currents and tides that characterize it make these places very special to photograph. This is exactly the case of playa de barrika, a beach very influenced by the tide phenomenon, during the low tide, the sea retreats by discovering these rocks from this particular ridge form

That day I took about two hours in this location, the prospect on the rocks with a long exposure was my goal. The main difficult was when the tide began to rise the water, the sea grew more and more to my feet and this destabilized the stand, so I tried to avoid exposing too long for this I stay in the range of 20 seconds in more dry areas using an nd64 filter

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take a single exposure for this shot so my editing this time was not a blending, nevertheless I used the same luminosity masks applied to levels and curves to lighten and darken some parts of the frame. With dodge and burn I lightened some part of the rocks and on the water, than I added details and sharpen using TTS Fast Panel

After a fix of contrast made with luminosity masks applied to curves, I increased the yellow tones to give a warm touch to the picture. At the end I decreased luminosity of the sky and on the rocks using to create a more dark mood

Midnight Memories

Rocca calascio is an excellent solution for photographing stars and milky way, the ruins were illuminated by the lights coming from the castle that until 1 AM were still on, nevertheless the visibility of the milky way was still great!

I have been here collecting so many shots of a beautiful starry sky, beginning today with this first photo promising to post the others on the return of my next trip to Northern Spain. This is actually my last post before my trip, when I  will come back with so many new content. Stay connected!

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is a single shot, I edited it before in camera raw decreasing exposures and increasing contrast, shadows and blacks

One opened in Photoshop I made some adjustments to lights and shadows using luminosity masks, than I made a big work of dodge and burn with I fixed lights around the milky way

With hue/saturation I fixed colors around the stars and I decreased the yellows around the ruins. I applied sharpen and orton effect with TTS Fast Panel. As final touch I reduced noise and I applied a small vignette to the frame

Night from Day

Probably soon, I will return to this beautiful place, while I look at the old shots made the last time I went to Campo Imperatore to photograph the milky way I found this untreated photo

That afternoon I made some shots at the beautiful rocky lake and then moved to the point where the milky way was better visible at night, this is just one of the shots I did at the time of the first darks of night, at the time discarded but today revalued

The reflections of clouds and stars on the water of the lake create a magical atmosphere throughout the picture. At that time I probably had discarded it because the sky was too cloudy and the milky street was almost on the opposite side but having found a shot with this particular light was almost a surprise 🙂

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I had only a shot, indeed two! The second is another picture with more foreground and less sky, I blended the two images to have a more complete frame with sky and foreground

I worked this picture only using luminosity masks applied to curves and other effect launched from my panel, high details, sharpen and dodge and burn as well. I also edited the colors warming the sky and pushing up some highlighs, I increased contrast and darkness to give a dark mood to the picture

As the final touch I reduce noise, at some points in the photo there was visible. I hope you will find this usefull, I’m always happy to ear it from you!

For someone, it may sound strange, but when I photograph my city it means I’ve been short supply of photos to work 😀
I’m actually waiting for the next trip to make some new shots, in the meantime I go to Rome that always offers great locations to be photographed, one of this in my opinion is precisely the “Via Sacra“, located between the Coliseum square and the Imperial Forums was in Antiquity is the most important street of ancient Rome

I take this shot after the closing of the “roman forum” to get fewer tourist on the road, the summer sunset time allows you to reconcile a beautiful location with a less busy street than usual with the sunset in front of you

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I take several shots during the sunset, I make a blend using luminosity masks. After this, I photomerged the resulting frame with another shot with more foreground to englarge the view of the viewer

I launched dodge and burn to increse light on the rocks in the foreground and to darken some part of the sky. After applied details and sharpen using my panel, I launched orton effect to increase glows and darks

I used a warm filter in the sky and a LAB Color in the whole frame. As the final touch I increase contrasts applied to luminosity masks and a vignette to emphasize the central light

The Golden Bay

This is a beach located on the north of Malta, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is a sandy beach with a blue sea but has two cliffs on its sides

It is on one of these cliffs that I went to take this photo, I made several shots since the sun was high when it dropped under the cliff, I caught all the moments using my nd filter, the idea was to merge the multiple exposures between solar reflections and sea

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I divided the exposures between the series sun on top and sun behind the cliff, I merged the two series separately using luminosity masks. Then I blended this two layers using a gradient between sky and sea

I made some lights adjustments using curves applied to luminosity masks, then I launched high details and sharpen using my panel. The step later was to correct some color cast and increasing yellows

Using dodge and burn I fix some luminosity around the rocks and the sea, after some other light and contrast correction I increased color vividness using LAB Color

Frostbite Touch 3

This is a old find from my pictures from the lake Calaita in Trentino, I  left behind this photo, which deserved to be processed. I really appreciated the beauty of this lake during winter with its frosts, definitely come back next winter in this beautiful place to take new pictures here

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The workflow of this shot is similar of the previous posts. I blended the shots with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast and then with my panel  I launched high details and sharpen to increase details in the picture, I used dodge and burn to increase the light around the main rocks, the nearest fields and the trees.

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and increased darks to make uniform light in the frame. After this I used orton effect to create a glow contrasted effect, I also increased contrast using darks 2 applied to curves adjustment layer.

With the help of hue/saturation I decreased blue on the top of the picture.  I increasesed vibrance using LAB color technique and darkened border of the frame using a vignette tool. This picture is always from the lake Calaita in Trentino som minutes before the picture of my previous post. This lake is an amazing place, and I hope to come back here soon during sping, in order to photograph it with other colors and to admire the transparency of its waters

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The workflow of this shot is very close from my previous post, except for the focus stacking, that I not applied it having taken this picture from a different height I was not close to the rocks and the fire was the same between the two low points and high image. I blended the shots with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast and then with my panel  I launched high details and sharpen to increase details in the frame, I used dodge and burn to increase the light around the stones and darken the images around them

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and I fixed light around the mountain, always with fast panelI launched orton effect to create a soft glow effect. With the help of hue/saturation I decreased blue on the top of the picture applied to a gradient to remove the effect in the lower part of the picture, as the final touch I increasesed vibrance using LAB color technique. I hope you will find this information usefull, if you have any tips, write to me. Frostbite Touch

I took this picture at the lake Calaita in Trentino a few kilometers from Fiera di Primiero, lake Calaita is a small alpine lake is located in the upper Vanoi valley and is a spectacular balcony on the Pale of San Martino. The day that photograph this lake was not very cold, but the wind is channeled between the mountains was something of incredibly icy, I am not surprised that the lake was frozen, at the end of my shooting session though I was I covered much I had to spend a few minutes in the car to warm myself back  😀

I made several shots at sunset, using  focus stacking technique between the rocks and the mountain, I took with a very wide dynamic range since there was a strong contrast between the foreground and highlights

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the exposures of lake Calaita with focus stacking to focus all the rocks and mountain in the frame, then I blended again the results images with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast then with TTS Fast Panel and I launched details and sharpen to increase them, finally I launched dodge and burn to increase the light around the stones and darken the images around them

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and I fixed light around the mountain, always with my panel I launched orton effect to increase the glow in the picture. With the help of hue/saturation I decreased some blue too much up, as the final touch I launched levels adjustment layer to fix the exposure in the frame. I hope you will find this information usefull, if you have any tips, write it as well. Ascension

Here we are in the new year with views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This picture is part of the images that I made last October during my trip on the place. I took this picture in the late afternoon after a long time under the Tre Cime waiting the best light. I realize this final image after different series of exposures including one where I put a finger in front of the lens to remove the lens flare that reverberated in the image 🙂

I was with a D90 rent by a friend and I made five bracketed exposures using before a bkt series (-1, 0, +1) and then a (-2, 0, +2) because the menu of  D90 will not take us longer than three bracketed exposures. However I was in the past a possessor of Nikon D90 and I not remember about it, D90 has proven a great camera, it has done a great job 🙂

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started as usual with the digital blending of the images using the luminosity masks, starting from the over exposed  that I gradually darkened on the foreground and the sky, I repeated the same thing for the other series of exposures made by placing the finger in front the sun to avoid lens flare. So I created two final images taken with a digital blending, one with the sun and one with my finger placed in front of it. I used this last to remove all reflections from the main picture having an image from the sunlight clean without reflections

I flatten all levels and started editing the picture mainly using camera raw, I lowered  the exposure, highlights and lights. With my panel I launched the luminosity masks and applied contrast using midtones 3 applied to curves and soft light. I launched the dodge and burn with whom I dodge some points of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo as areas illuminated by the sun in the foreground.

I launched the effects high details and sharpen to increase detail and sharpness. As a finishing touch I still got up the contrasts using the levels adjustment layer and created a small vignetting to enhance the viewer’s vision depth.
