This is a beach located on the north of Malta, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is a sandy beach with a blue sea but has two cliffs on its sides

It is on one of these cliffs that I went to take this photo, I made several shots since the sun was high when it dropped under the cliff, I caught all the moments using my nd filter, the idea was to merge the multiple exposures between solar reflections and sea

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I divided the exposures between the series sun on top and sun behind the cliff, I merged the two series separately using luminosity masks. Then I blended this two layers using a gradient between sky and sea

I made some lights adjustments using curves applied to luminosity masks, then I launched high details and sharpen using my panel. The step later was to correct some color cast and increasing yellows

Using dodge and burn I fix some luminosity around the rocks and the sea, after some other light and contrast correction I increased color vividness using LAB Color

As usual I hope you will find this usefull. Your feedback is my pleasure!

Sunset at the Harbor

From Aegina to Skiathos, this is a beautiful and famous island which is located in the archipelago of the Cyclades. Much of Skiathos island fame is the fact that it was the main location of the famous musical “Mamma Mia”, where exactly here were filmed most scenes of the movie. This is the port of the city island taken over by a small hill in front of

I take several shots on this hill since they had a favorable position towards the sunset and the city harbor. I made a small stack of photographs to take as many as possible in the frame rocks and make the image more depth

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I start as usual using Luminosity Masks to blend all the bracketed exposures taken in the port of Skiathos.  When I got a final image I combined this with the image I had taken further down with rocks to merge them together to get such a small vertorama. With the resulting “basic” image of  I started to change the lights, shadows, highlights the Curves tool inside Camera Raw

Using  LAB Color I pushed up vibrance and yellows color, then I applied Dodge and Burn tool on the rocks to make them brighter. I increased details in the whole frame, then, with a small gaussian blur, I removed a small noise in the water. For this I applied gaussian blur with a black layer mask (hidden), with a white brush I painted all the water to smooth it. Finally I increased the contrast using curves tool  and created a slight vignetting to give more prominence to the central area

During my stay in Aegina I went to the famous Temple of Aphaia, is the main attraction of this Greek island and I must admit that it is a wonderful spot. The Temple of Aphaia is located on a top a promontory overlooking the cliffs of Agia Marina, get there at sunset was not easy because of the Greek island public transport had a fairly limited hours and I found myself without a car. So I decided to climb by bus and then get off to Agia Marina on foot through a small mountain path. Whereas at that time there were no more public transport who got in around the archaeological site was almost desert. So I had this spot all to myself till the complete closing time of the place 🙂 As I said I did a lot of photos and this is the frontal view of the Temple of Aphaia. I made a bracketed series of about 5 shots but I’ve used less than half in my final image the more overexposed one used  to lighten the foreground that was so dark

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Starting from the correct exposure I focused to clear shadows of contrasts of the strong sun. I used Luminance Masks to blend the two layers. Always with the help of overexposed shot I cleared the sun’s rays to make a greater impact. I used the Lab Color with 60% opacity and then stepped up yellow using Hue/Saturation. Then I take a small Dodge and Burn on the rocks and on the temple itself and then I increased the details throughout the frame. Finally I slightly increased the contrast to give more prominence to the sky and added a small vignetting with Darken Lighten Center in Color Efex Pro at 35%

A Secret Place

After days spent in Athens I moved on a island that is located in front of Athens… the island of Aegina. Is a peaceful island away from mass tourism, where there are mainly locals and Athenians who come to spend their holidays on an island easily accessible. When I took this picture I was in the island’s capital “Egina” which of course is the reference center of the whole area. I found this micro beach on the road leading out of the center of Aegina on which there was this small dock on the sea.

I take some shots using bracketing over the area to have good exposure for the sky and clouds and I shot a exposure to get a strong focus on the foregroud. With the passing of time that carried on the increasingly light toward the blue hour, I started doing more and more tests with exposure compensation up to that have not come into a state of low light. I set a value of -5 exposure compensation on my D800 with a 20-second exposure time, I managed to get good results (I know I have to decide to buy photo filters) 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I start my edit with the sky, using the Luminosity Masks it was very easy to bring down the exposure of the sky without affecting the entire image. Then was the turn of a Dodge and Burn intervention to clean water from reflections and to brighten other part of the frame too darks. With the help of Color Lookup adjustment layer I added two effect to the frame, I am talking about Foggy Night and Drop Blues using a lower opacity 15-20% to give a small surreal effect to the frame. Using this technique I give more impact to the sunset light on the edge. As a final step I increased the details on the entire imag and contrasts, again making use of Luminosity Masks combined with the curves tool. For the last touch I use Color Efex pro filter to add a small vignette using Darken Lighten Center filter.

Beyond the Hills

For my last post on the island of Ischia, I propose again a shot made in Sant’angelo district, certainly one of the most beautiful of the island. I stood on top of a large rock which is just a continuation of the beach that you can see on the right to take this picture. Is exactly the opposite point of my first posts about Sant’Angelo that you can find here. The whole area has a beautiful sunset hiding beyond the hills but at the same time, sunset lights disappears soon because covered.

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I made several shots in bracketing mode: a few different times with the strongest light, others with weaker light after the sun was covered but in the end I focused on a middle ground that represents  moment where the sun was near to hide behind the hill. Neverthless I made several shots, this image is from a single RAW, the reason for this choice is that I was satisfied of the picture and did not find it necessary to use the other exposures… For a once I made life easier 🙂

So I processed the image mainly with Camera Raw, making corrections on the white balance, contrast, lights and shadows. A cool colorfull light was added with Color Efex Pro, I raised the highlights to increase the glow effect behind the hill and a small Orton Effect to the frame. I increased the details and reduced the same part on the water.

The Rock

During my stay in Ischia I could not visit the characteristic Castello Aragonese. , Is a rising fort on a small island of volcanic origin slightly detached from Ischia and connected  through the bridge you see on the right. The whole island of Castello Aragonese can be visited and is also very interesting, if you want to get to the top, there’s also a lift that allows you to save you skip 60 meters high.

I went to the castle a few minutes before sunset , I did not have much of a hurry because my intention was to photograph it during the blue hour… so it was, I came across this little corner of the beach that run along the bridge leading to the castle, I take on the place some shots between the different moments of the sunset.

I started working with luminosity masks to blend the exposures, sky was manually blended from another series of exposures I take before. After the blend of the images with luminance masks I started increasing colors (more yellows) to create a cool mix between golden hour and blue hour. I put a little Orton Effect to the image to create a gleam effect to the lights behind Castello Aragonese, some detail increase and contrast adjustments using my action pack and that’s it.

I spent a wonderful weekend in Ischia in the early June of this year, this island is located in the south of Italy just close to the city of Naples. I did not go on this island for many years and it was nice to come back to relive those places, those people that sea. First photographic exit on the island of Ischia I went to Sant’Angelo district, one of the most beautiful island, here a ground strap meets a small island by creating a shortcut very particular. I took several photos throughout the area including this one which is taken from the road that leads to Sant’Angelo. Photo made from 5 exposures and combined with luminance masks, I did not madevery large interventions save as saturation to bring out the colors of the sunset.

The Blackout

Series of exposures taken in the island of Ios, I can not tell exactly what place I retracting in this landscape, but what you see on the other side of the mountain is a sunset, harbour direction. I started taking these shots in the late sunset and continued in the following time. For this image I created a series of 7 shots in various moments of the evening, manually merged to get the final result, for longer exposures I used a 2 minutes time around. Benefited from the low-light town, in the highest exposures I managed to capture some passing star 🙂

I worked very much on colours, contrasts, and details, using longer exposures to the sky and to lighten the foreground which at times was too dark.

Oia Sunset

Giuseppe Sapori - Oia Sunset

The famous as beautiful sunset in Oia, Santorini. Personally, the most beautiful sunset and exciting I’ve ever photographed, not surprisingly, the place in August was very full of people everywhere over each other trying to capture a sunset. To take this shot I come on my place around 3 hours before, around the sun goes down I was surrounded by hundred people 🙂

To figure out how many people were in the village of Oia just look carefully along the streets of the village, you will notice a human chain along the entire route of the roads. Once at home I made a very big job of editing on this picture. I wanted a wide photo but with a little more defined to the village and in the center, so I decided to make a partial crop to focus more towards the center and remove part of the walls of the houses that were within the frame. But the main difficulty was to eliminate and reduce the visual impact of the hundreds of people who had in the frame, in addition to the elimination of antenna that I was in front and I could not erase in any way except with Photoshop. From thecomparison you can better understand what I mean
