This is a shot taken outside the walls of San Gimignano, in this area, it is possible to see the view of the typical hills of this part of the Italy is one of the most characteristic places in the area.

I made this shot from San Gimignano lookout on a cloudy day during the morning, it was my last shot on this area before get back into the car and go back home

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The first thing I did was crop the photo, in fact, the image you see is the result of a crop within a larger scene where there were other houses and trees that I have decided to remove from the frame. The central view of the hills was definitely what I wanted to portray, but I could not do it shooting cause I had with me just wide angle 🙂

Then I made a color correction to change color cast of this image, which will be the subject of my next tutorial, so stay tuned! I applied dodge and burn through the trees and the most darken areas, with TTS Fast Panel I launched orton effect to give to the hills and a soft glow effect with a bit of contrast. After adding details in the whole frame I adjusted contrast and this is it!

I hope you will find this information usefull, if you have any tips or comments, write it as well. I love to hear it from you 🙂

The Abbey of San Galgano is a cistercian abbey, located to thirty kilometers from Siena, in the city of Chiusdino. The site consists in a hermitage (Montesiepi Rotonda) and from the great abbey, now completely ruined and reduced to only walls.

Nevertheless the abbey of St. Galgano is not left in total decay, this abbey is the destination  of tourist flow and the place is maintained by the confraternity who is dealing. To make this shot I made 7 brackets exposures using a ND64 filter to remove people moving in the church

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I make a digital blending between the images discarding only a couple of too light frames, using luminosity masks, I adjusted the highlights and darks, some points of the abbey were very dark so with my panel I launched dodge and burn to lighten or darken the image at the points that I wanted

After adding a little ‘to contrast with the midtones masks, I stepped details and sharpen in the frame. As the last adjustments I set the color cast lowering some blue saturation in the clouds.  I hope you find this information useful, if you have any suggestions write to me, I love always hear you

Giuseppe Sapori - Flying over roofs

Views of Siena from the roofs, I took this shot during a visit on t the so-called facciatone, very large archway present to the left of the cathedral in Siena. The view of the city from here  is very interesting and certainly one of the best things to do in Siena. The only limit, is that the rooftop of facciatone is within a guided tour so you can not stay on top for more than 15 minutes. I took this picture with 3 handheld bracketed exposures  since was not allowed to use tripod

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The first thing was to align the three exposures that I blended together using luminosity masks. Always using luminosity masks, I set the shadows areas and lights one, with hue / saturation I desaturated the blue intensity of the sky. I launched dodge and burn to better adjust the exposure along the cathedral and the sky and with Fast Panel I launched high details and sharpen effect to have a great detail exalt in the frame. As the final touch i adjust the contrast in the image.

It ‘was a quick and easy editing, I did not want to touch the colors that were was very natural. I hope you find this information useful, if you have any tips or comments, write it as well. I love to hear it from you:)

The heart of Siena in a photo, the beautiful cathedral in middle of the square town e in a late December afternoon. I made this photo from a series of shots, from a minimum of 5 seconds to a maximum of 30 using a filter nd64 -6 stop. Try to imagine how many people, tourists and some vehicles was in the square at five of afternoon, i tried to “clean all” using a long exposure with the filter, specifically I use Haida filter and holder on my Nikon 14-24, I use Haida filters  for about 2 months and so far have always behaved very well 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the exposures taken together using luminosity masks, I had the shots taken at different times of the evening, I blended  2 shots  between best sky and less people/more light trails available in one final frame. With TTS Fast Panel I used dodge and burn to lighten some dark parts of the foreground and darken some too light part of the cathedral

With the transform command I repositioned the perspective of the photo correcting some falling lines, especially among the buildings around the basilica. I used luminosity masks to correct lights and highlights behind the cathedral and to lighten the foreground that was very dark, with my panel I launched details and sharpen. At the end I increased contrast using curves exalting the middle light

Here we are in the new year with views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This picture is part of the images that I made last October during my trip on the place. I took this picture in the late afternoon after a long time under the Tre Cime waiting the best light. I realize this final image after different series of exposures including one where I put a finger in front of the lens to remove the lens flare that reverberated in the image 🙂

I was with a D90 rent by a friend and I made five bracketed exposures using before a bkt series (-1, 0, +1) and then a (-2, 0, +2) because the menu of  D90 will not take us longer than three bracketed exposures. However I was in the past a possessor of Nikon D90 and I not remember about it, D90 has proven a great camera, it has done a great job 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I started as usual with the digital blending of the images using the luminosity masks, starting from the over exposed  that I gradually darkened on the foreground and the sky, I repeated the same thing for the other series of exposures made by placing the finger in front the sun to avoid lens flare. So I created two final images taken with a digital blending, one with the sun and one with my finger placed in front of it. I used this last to remove all reflections from the main picture having an image from the sunlight clean without reflections

I flatten all levels and started editing the picture mainly using camera raw, I lowered  the exposure, highlights and lights. With my panel I launched the luminosity masks and applied contrast using midtones 3 applied to curves and soft light. I launched the dodge and burn with whom I dodge some points of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo as areas illuminated by the sun in the foreground.

I launched the effects high details and sharpen to increase detail and sharpness. As a finishing touch I still got up the contrasts using the levels adjustment layer and created a small vignetting to enhance the viewer’s vision depth. I hope you find this information useful, if you have any tips, questions or advices leave a comment I am always proud to hear you

Crystal Mirror

Lake Landro with its typical reflections of the mount cristallo, this location is truly exceptional. I didn’t know this lake before, I saw this place passing by car and I stopped and go out to take some shots of this place, it’s a beautiful place perfect for photography. The lake was slightly dry but I tried to position myself in front of the main reflection, I take 3 exposures trying to emphasize the foreground and its reflections. Unfortunately in this trip I did not have my Nikon D800 cause the broke of diaphragms level, I shoot this picture and the the other of the following post with a Nikon D90 with fortunately has been quite good 🙂

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The picture had a so natural and beautiful light that it no need many edits, I only make Photoshop edits to brighten highlighs and enhance the contrast. I started merging the exposures with luminosity masks, made some color corrections and add contrast using midtones. With the help of lights masks I increased highlighs and with darks lightened the main part of the mountains.

I added some adjustments with dodge and burn, added orton effect and details using TTS Fast Panel. As final intervention I added more contrast and a small vigneting to emphatize the central part of the frame and darken the borders.

View of St. Peter Basilica by Sant’Angelo bridge. For me this is one of the top spots location in Rome to photograph. All of Castel Sant’Angelo area in general is one of my favorites of my city, the reflections which at sunset are located along the Tiber River, the last lights of the sky before sunset and the first lights of the city. I take 5 bracketed shots with tripod on the large handrail of the bridge during the blue hour

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the exposures with luminosity masks, I used midtones mask to create some contrasts after the blend. I applied dodge and burn tool over the bridge to give more light on it and to darken more the sky. With the help of hue/saturation tool I decreased the yellows over the lights and make some color corrections in the image (increased blues).

I increased some details and sharpness in the whole frame using TTS Fast Panel, also applied a little Orton Effect. As final I adjust the highlighs and contrast again using luminosity masks applied to curves. It was a fast and easy edit in this photo, I hope that you find this useful, and you and what would you have done? Write it, I always love to hear from it from you

I am in the same location of Agios Ioannis in Skopelos. As I said I did a lot of photos here and for a few weeks I will post only about this place 🙂

Here I was always close to the Agios Ioannis beach where I took several photos to the coast of the beach focusing on the rocks near the foreground. In that morning I was lucky benefiting from the cloudy sky in the morning there was a beautiful diffused light over the entire area

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

For first thing I prepared all 5 of my exposures captured in photoshop and I started working them using TTS Fast Panel and Luminosity Masks to capture the entire dynamic range. I discarded the most overexposed shot and lowered the lights on the rocks  with luminosity masks applied the curves tool. I made the same thing to increase highlights in the sky.

After I applied a Dodge and Burn tool, to make it more homogeneous light and to finish the work previously done with luminosity masks, same with Dodge and Burn I made some light effects on the lower rocks in the foreground. Using the Fast Panel I launched the effects to enhance and sharpen the details, then Lab Color to give the image more vivid aspect. I increased yellow tonalities checking the effect on the bottom left rocks, I applied at the end a little Orton Effect, contrast and vignetting to accentuate the effects of light in the central part of the frame

Chasing the Sun

In Agios Ioannis I probably take all my pictures of Skopelos, on my arrival I found a very cloudy day with threatening skies but also with the beautiful rays of light that filtered through the clouds. This is just one of the many shots that I did in Agios Ioannis Kastri, on this picture, I was on the shore of the beach before taking the walkway toward the top of the monastery

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Starting from 5 exposures shots, I blend them using Luminosity Masks and TTS Fast Panel, I used all my exposures exept for the more brightest. After applied details and Orton Effect, I used Dodge and Burn tool to give some enhancements to the rocks and to the mountain. I adjusted the colors to the neutral values using hue/saturation filter, then I applied the LAB Color  to intensify the colors and emphasize the greens

However blues colors remained, very strong especially in the sky as well, with the “click and drag”  function present in hue/saturation filter I have reduced blues in the affected areas. I raised the central photo brightness and increased the contrast using midtones masks applied to the curves (select a midtones mask> curves> change the blending method in soft light). The final touch was to create a slight vignetting for intensifying the dark near the rocks and give more light the center of the frame by adding yet another contrast, this time to the entire image

A Light in the Dark

From Skiathos  to Skopelos, another Greek island of great natural value. This island is a spectacle of nature and mountains and has some fantastic location. One of these is  Agios Ioannis, a location on northeast of the island where there is a small monastery on a top of a cliff of the mountains, the whole area of Agios Ioannis, sea, beach, boundary mountains are an incredible sight that it is rarely seen in seascapes.

When  I went to Agios Ioannis I photographed  every part of the place, benefited from the cloudy sky in the morning there was a beautiful diffused light over the entire area, including this opening to the sky, on the road leading to the monastery I stopped on this open to the sea which offered this composition of rocks below

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

Although I made a bracketed series of the scene, I realized the whole image with the use of luminosity masks applied to the regular exposure. The reason for this is that the contrasts between the sky and the foreground remained still high despite the bracketing series, where the benefit of using multiple exposures will employ more time.

For this reason I applied the luminosity masks to the affected areas of the sky using lights masks, the sea and rocks using darks masks, working them almost exclusively with the curves tool. Always applying the luminosity masks, I used dodge and burn on rock and water, applying them to hue / saturation tool I reduced the saturation of water colors with contrasts had intensified excessively.

Other uses of  luminosity masks are on the sky to increase the color tones and midtones to increase the contrast. At the last I increased the details in the whole frame, all the changes were made using my panel that you can download free in the download section
