Here I am coming back from my travels, I’ve visited magnificent places and I am very happy with all the shots made, and new posts and new content will come!

As I wrote in my last post by taking from my last photos taken in Rocca Calascio and especially in front of the little Santa Maria of Pietà that is near the fortress. Even this church as the ruins of the picture of my previous post were illuminated by the light of the castle but also in this case I am very pleased with the visibility of the milky way!

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

This is also a single shot, I edited it before in camera raw decreasing exposures and increasing contrast, shadows and blacks

One opened in Photoshop I made some adjustments to lights and shadows using luminosity masks, than I made a big work of dodge and burn with I fixed lights around the milky way

I fixed colors in the picture  and I decreased the yellows around the church. I applied hight details and orton effect with TTS Fast Panel. As final touch I reduced noise and I applied a small vignette to the frame

Frostbite Touch 3

This is a old find from my pictures from the lake Calaita in Trentino, I  left behind this photo, which deserved to be processed. I really appreciated the beauty of this lake during winter with its frosts, definitely come back next winter in this beautiful place to take new pictures here

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

The workflow of this shot is similar of the previous posts. I blended the shots with luminosity masks. I correct the color cast and then with my panel  I launched high details and sharpen to increase details in the picture, I used dodge and burn to increase the light around the main rocks, the nearest fields and the trees.

With luminosity masks I decreased highlighs and increased darks to make uniform light in the frame. After this I used orton effect to create a glow contrasted effect, I also increased contrast using darks 2 applied to curves adjustment layer.

With the help of hue/saturation I decreased blue on the top of the picture.  I increasesed vibrance using LAB color technique and darkened border of the frame using a vignette tool. Turn on the Lights

View of Porta Nuova in Milan, I made this photo from a series of shots taken during the last hours of light until sundown. Porta Nuova is a great place for cityscapes and to take light trails, during my shot. To realize this frame  I blended a series of exposures, starting from the golden hour to better exploit the best light up to the evening dark where I added the light trails taken later

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I blended the base shot (for the sky) from 3 exposures as obtaining a final frame, than I added 3 more shots with light trails that I blended with the previous blend.  To add light trails on the other exposure just change the blending mode to lighten.

I launched dodge and burn to fix lights and shadows around the lights areas and buildings, I fixed color cast and I make some tone adjustmets using color lookup filters adding a 16% of “futuristic bleak”I increased details and launched luminosity masks with TTS Fast Panel to make some adjustments to the shadows and into the higlights, always with midtones of luminosity masks I incresed contrast in the frame.

After the apply of a small vignette, I made the ultimate adjustments to the picture using levels. Hope you will find this usefull. For anything write to me, I’m always happy to hear it on you!

The Arch of Peace

I was in Milan and one of the places I wanted to photograph was the Arch of Peace, this is a triumphal arch located at the beginning of Corso Sempione. Dedicated to peace between European nations reached in 1815 with the Congress of Vienna. The Arch of Peace is one of the greatest neoclassical monuments in Milan

It is located in a large square, that although I was in the middle of the afternoon, no people was in the place, this has facilitated me a lot for the shot 😀 I applied a focus stacking between the foreground and the arch in the background to avoid issues of focus between the two subjects

 

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I selected 3 bracketed exposures shots for the foreground and 3 for the Arch of Peace, I blended  them using fous stacking and with the final 3 shots I applied luminosity masks to have a final image with all the blending correction. With dodge and burn tool I lightened some building, the arch and some bricks in the foreground, I applied high details with TTS Fast Panel to increase details without giving a crappy look at the picture

With luminosity masks again I fix highlighs and shadows, then I fix contrasts using midtones masks applied to curves layer. I fix the color cast and I applied a violet filter to the frame using this method

As final touch I launched curves to set the latest lights, contrast in the image. I hope you will find this informations usefull, if you have any tips or question about it write to me. I’m always happy to hear it on you!

The Hollow

The plain of Campo Imperatore on a quiet Sunday in December. I took this picture a few minutes before sunset in a small lake near the main road. That day I was going to make some shots to the largest and Lake Pietranzoni but I found all the roads closed due to snow and so I had to come back and take some shots here. I shot using  focus stacking between the foreground bush and the tip of Corno Grande of Gran Sasso basically doing three bracketed exposure shots by series

WORKFLOW EXPLANATION

I stack the images in three different pictures than I blended the different exposures togheder using luminosity masks. I increased contrast using curves applied to midtones and I raised up contrast again using midtones minus darks to avoid too much darken parts around the foreground. With the help of my panel, I launched details and sharpen, then I used dodge and burn to refine lights and darks around the bush

I make some color correction using camera raw and I decreased the blue on the top of the frame with hue/saturation. As final touch I added a vignette to the image increasing a little bit more contrast.  I hope you find this informations useful, if you have any suggestions write to me, I love always hear you

Twelve Sides of Gold

This is the Seville Tower of Gold (in Spanish Torre del Oro) is one of the landmarks of the city, the whole area surrounding the tower is a belvedere through Guadalquivir river. The river banks are a nice walk with bicycle lanes, a bridge overlooking the river where it can be admired a landscape of the city flanked by the tower. The Tower of Gold is composed of twelve sides and 36 meters high is an important symbol for the people of Seville, the story has it that a result of the Lisbon earthquake, the tower was badly damaged and on that occasion the Marquis de Monte Real we proposed the demolition to widen the adjacent street but, in the face of strong opposition from the local population, the idea of ​​the demolition was abandoned. I planned this photo after a small scout of the area, having seen the bridge in fact, my first idea was to photograph the tower from the bridge, but did not offer the view I was hoping for… So I went down to the base of the bridge where I found the picture you see, the bar on the right with a little muddy foregroud, riverside and the beautiful tower of gol in the background was exactly the composition I was looking for.

When I take these shots I take exposures for the foreground and for the tower, to have all the images needed to apply a bracketed focus stacking. (for any clarification there’s a tutorial here). So 3 exposures to focus on the part of the foreground and 3 other exposures to focus properly the tower, I combined them with photomerge and then proceed to the traditional interventions with Photoshop. That’s all!

Road to the Stars II

Although I still have several shots made in the plain of Campo Imperatore with some other landscapes and stars. But this will probably be the last of this series of Gran Sasso, to afford my personal goal to publish always my best pictures, and also not to bore you 🙂 This road is the other side of the road of my previous post, as you can see is going down and this side is the one that gets out and goes to the highway.

In this side of the road there’s not milky ( but it was behind me as the previous post), I really enjoyed the glow lights of the city reflected on the horn of the mountain to the left looking at the stars in the sky. The light pollution (if distant) are impressive favorably with those yellows contrasting with the colors of the blue of the night. In this photo I had fun playing on the flashes and colors of the lights in the distance to create a greater yellow effect.

Moonwalk

Night shot taken in the valley of Campo Imperatore under the peaks of the Grand Sasso mountain. I realized this image in the following hours to that of my previous post. Unfortunately where I was previously, the mountains close me a full view of the milky way and clouds dirtied a little too much the landscape, I had to leave the beautiful location where I was standing near the lake and the Corno Grande, to follow the milky way to make it fully visible in a lower part of the mountain.

When I arrived at this place,  the moon was still high, so I waited for the sunset of the moon to see the most of all the milky way show. I create this image by two main shots, a exposure taken to the sky and a second for the foreground. I combined the two shots with the “Photomerge” funcion in Photoshop. For the sky shot I used an exposure time of 30 seconds and high ISO value. For the foreground, instead I used 4 minute long exposure time and less ISO  to bring brightness and visibility to the underlying stones.

The Explorer

Until this moment I have posted only pictures of my last trip in Greece and Meteora. I make a short stop before continuing with the pictures of my last trip, posting this photo quite recently made last month at my girlfriend’s house. The photo is one single shot made not too distant from private houses, although there was a fairly light pollution with some clouds the stars were visible, nevertheless I had to do a lot of work in Photoshop to bring out the “best” from this image.

What I Do

I made this picture by just one shot, I wanted to see if I could bring out the stars and a subject at the same time, I was not much to think about exposure and the composition because in reality the main photo was another (i will post it). This inattention has cost me a lot…I counted  around 18 levels of Photoshop between before and after. Having made just one shot was a mistake, I had the problem of “dose” exposure between the portions of the pictures was too dark and the too light ones.  This time even luminance masks was not very usefull,  the whole image was treated practically only with the filters and Camera Raw.  Oh well obviously in the picture is me 🙂

Defenceless

I was on the streets of Kalambaka when I saw this dark road leading for the Meteors. The road was very dark, only a few lights in the distance created a bit ‘of light pollution, my personal goal was to portray some few stars. I take for this picture 5 shots (without BKT), one of which is much higher intentionally to bring it back with the exposing to the right and pull out the stars. Suddently a car, probably a resident, has started to switch back and forth a few times. Now, in addition to the curious fact itself, I do not hide that for a moment I thought he was observing me, the fact is that he ruined some shots which I then had to repeat it before. However, the passage of the car allowed me to create an additional element to my photo,  by inserting it in one of my shots to create such an effect full of sky and foreground.

As I said, I made this picture by taking several pictures, I used three of them in Photoshop: 

-The first for the correct exposure of the lawn, road, meteors

-The second ETTR  for the sky, that I worked in Camera Raw to allow the stars of “exit “outside

-The last one with the passage of the car on the road.  I knew his movements 🙂
